Kahr Diak had not been an officially-recognized member of KAOS for long - a few days, perhaps - but it had already been long enough to make an impact within the Blue Banner Army. Mostly, because they had utterly misread their relationship with the Volunteer Corps. As a result, they'd successfully alienated someone they hoped to be a friend, and were left with little idea of how to fix that problem. It was depressing, deeply depressing, but a solution had formed itself in Kahr's mind. Perhaps... they should seek the opinion of one of their fellow KAOS Fighters? They, not the Volunteers, were supposed to be their Comrades-in-Arms, were they not?
It had seemed like such a good idea when they sent the message - brief and to the point - requesting that Liang meet them at a Bubble Tea Cafe in East City (BubbleKitty, so called because the waitresses - for reasons that entirely escape Kahr - wear cute little cat headbands and tails).
The longer they sat here waiting for their comrade to appear, though, the more nervous Kahr became.
The tapioca-based beverage was disgustingly sweet for Kahr's palette, and sitting in the window in their long, white coat with their dazzling white pants and their very shiny shoes, Kahr could not feel much more conspicuous. The tanned, androgynous Bio-Android stuck out like a sore thumb compared to the young and hip crowd bustling about them. More to the point, people keep TALKING about them, whispering and giggling. It is most disconcerting.
And in a few moments, a man who had been there since the very beginning - second only to Administrator Azure himself - would walk through that door, and Kahr would ask him... what? How to make FRIENDS? How to make people like them? Like some awkward teenager in a terrible kids TV show?
This was a bad idea. A very bad idea. But... but they couldn't just back out now, could they?

For once in a good great while, Liang had the luxury of downtime. It had been a rocky past few weeks for the KAOS Captain, and it seemed like over a short span of time he'd been everywhere at once and then some. Having left the brave men and women in his unit to train amongst themselves (actually, he was giving one of his more uppity soldiers a chance at being an instructor, but nobody else needed to know that), Liang had decided to visit a place he hadn't been to in a very long time; East Capitol. Having preferred his favorite ramen shop in South City for quite some time, he had unfortunately forgotten that East City was widely regarded as the Food Capitol of the four. He was pleasantly reminded as he walked calmly through the streets, enjoying the light breeze in his casual outfit for the day; a sleeveless shirt, a vest, a pair of boots, and a pair of jeans complete with his Blue Banner tags around his neck though tucked into his undershirt. Leaning back and taking in the delicious aromas, he cradled his head in his hands as he walked along; he was trying to very hardest not to get distracted and sidetracked by a delicious meal, and it was proving to be incredibly difficult. He'd taken preventive measures, such as eating before leaving the base he'd departed from, but even that didn't help as his stomach let out a small grumble. Deciding it would be smart to hurry along and get off the street before he felt bad by making the one he'd come here to meet wait up, he increased his pace to a power walk and took in the sights (namely women) as he strode past at a brisk pace. Stuffing his hands in his pockets with his thumbs hanging out, he peered around for the meet-up location.
From the message, this ''Kahr'' seemed to be very to-the-point, and possibly no-nonsense. He'd met a few members of the rank and file and of KAOS that were the same way, so he could only hope he could keep his goofy mishaps in check long enough to leave a good first impression. Peering upward, he spotted the sign for the Bubblekitty Cafe, a smile crossing his face; so he was going to arrive on time after all! Stepping inside slowly, it was fairly evident the place was pretty popular. As a hostess approached him to ask where he'd like to be seated, he offered a dismissive and friendly gesture. ''Oh, no, thank you though! I'm actually here to meet somebody.'' Navigating through the small crowd of people and having to uncomfortably slip, squeeze, and wiggle his way through them like a human obstacle course, he popped out on the other side and peered around until he found a small gathering of people near a table with a lone figure seated. Watching them gesture and nod and giggle toward the individual, his brow furrowed; he recognized it was Kahr from the details of their dossier, and being he took things related to the other members of KAOS in a serious light, he clearly wasn't happy. Marching up to the group (a few women huddled up around two men, who were obviously the ''life of the party''), he folded his arms, his muscular frame adding to the weight of his disapproving glare.
''Something wrong, pal?'' ''Yeah. If you want something to laugh at, take your little sidekick there and stand in front of a mirror. Clear out.'' ''Care to repeat that?'' ''I said get the hell out of here.'' Fishing his tags from inside his undershirt and waving them up into the tough guy's face, he continued his stare as the guy seemed to get a bit nervous. ''I don't appreciate you cracking jokes about my friend over there. Take your rude comments somewhere else.'' With a helpless sigh, the jerk looked to his buddy and beckoned him along, the group heading for the door and making an immediate exit. As soon as Liang sat himself at the table, his demeanor completely changed the moment his rear hit the chair. Scooting forward and smiling with genuine kindness, his face painted with innocence, he extended a hand across. ''You must be Kahr. It's a real pleasure to meet you! I'm Liang, well...obviously. You sent me the message, but I just wasn't sure if you knew what I looked like; I tend to bounce around from base to base a lot.'' Chuckling a little, he'd leave his hand there for if Kahr decided to offer a friendly shake; some people were formal, others more laidback. He wouldn't be offended either way. He'd worry about ordering a beverage after the formalities were out of the way.

Kahr turned around when the laughter stopped, mostly out of curiosity - when they saw Liang talking to the guys, that got a little blink of surprise from the Bio-Android. It genuinely had not occurred to them that Liang might stand up for them like that, but it sure helped to get things off on the right foot. When the fellow KAOS Fighter comes over and offers his hand, Kahr is smiling bright and cheerful. Just like that, it was much easier to believe that things might, in fact, turn out okay - what a strange thought! After so much time locked in their own head, wondering about whether or not they had made some terrible mistake, it had almost seemed impossible that they might actually come out of this with a positive experience.
Kahr took Liang's hand in a loose shake, standing as they did to show respect. "Ah, yes, I looked up your file, Sir." Kahr explained. After a few seconds, they sit down again, and nod to the chair next to theirs. "Please, join me?"
It is easy to tell the Bio-Android was still at least a little tense and nervous - it was difficult not to be - but at least they no longer looked like they were about three seconds away from screaming and bolting for the door. Progress! The trouble is, Kahr is definitely still finding their feet. They aren't sure how much formality is expected, and although they know that - in theory - they and Liang are on the same level of authority... in practice, Liang is much, much more experienced than them and possessed of far more power. It isn't so much that Kahr is a stickler for formality; it is that they are vaguely concerned that if they mess up, they might be thrown out of KAOS altogether, and... what happens then? What would they do if they didn't serve the Blue Banner Army?
It was a horrible thought. One that had been running around and around in Kahr's head ever since the Captain's disapproval made them fear they might not be doing a very good job of fitting in.
Kahr's hand raised up over their bubble tea, and from a slit in their wrist, a sleek, shiny black tendril emerged. It dipped down into the sweet liquid to begin gulping as Kahr carried on their conversation. Well... if Liang had read their file, it hopefully wouldn't be too much of a surprise to see - and the motion was subtle enough that there wouldn't (hopefully) be any panic. But their mouths feel all dry! It would be much better if they could have a drink.
"I am really very grateful to you for coming to see me, Sir." Kahr continued, "As I am sure you are aware, I have not been an official member of KAOS for very long... it was always my Creator's wish that I dedicate myself to--" Suddenly, Kahr stopped, and their eyes opened wide in embarrassment.
"O-Oh! How dreadfully rude of me, I did not think... ah, please, please, Waitress?"
One of the hostesses bounced over almost immediately, in the absurdly-joyful fashion for which she was paid so handsomely.
"Hello-nya! How can-ya helpya?"
Kahr just sort of, stared at the woman for a beat, and then carried on as though this were a perfectly normal social interaction. Not worthy of comment in the least, the fact that she kept bouncing and meowing. Nope. Not at all.
"Please, could you get my friend a drink? I will pay, of course, and... could I get a glass of water too? Thank you, thank you."

With a firm handshake to the bio-android, Liang allowed himself to get comfortable. It wasn't often he was called ''Sir'', though. Most of the men that worked in his unit just called him Captain, usually. Fellow members of KAOS often just had him at a first-name basis, as friendly and welcoming as he was. As a friendly gesture, he piped up. ''You don't have to be so formal with me. You're KAOS, now. You hold as much rank as I do. If it makes you more comfortable, you can just call me Liang.'' Smiling at the offer of a seat, he nodded. ''Of course, gladly.'' Gently parking himself in the chair, he relaxed his posture on his offered seat at the table ready for the discussions to begin. His senses could pick up a reading from the android, and he could see right away why they had been chosen to be a part of KAOS; this was, of course, without Liang knowing the figure's full background. He'd met and fought alongside many capable members of KAOS before, even though now it seemed as if their ranks were going through a reformation of sorts. His eyes caught a small glimpse of a tiny tendril-like appendage the figure was hiding over their glass with their hand, using it to drink their chosen beverage. If he were anyone else, he might have found the display strange, but he had worked alongside a biological android before; one by the name of Reikiko. It wasn't exactly commonplace for him to see it, but he'd grown accustomed to the functions of such a being a long time ago. What he had dug up on Kahr's file made it a lot more normal in a sense as well.
''Oh it's no problem! I like getting to know the other members of KAOS. It builds a sense of teamwork, you know? Unity. Personally knowing each other I feel is what makes our team so great. Individuals can be strong, but as a unit, we're something else entirely. It's a pleasure to come out and talk to you.'' He found himself pleasantly surprised at Khar's polite demeanor. He didn't want to be rude and turn down the offer of a drink, so he perused a small menu at the table, his index finger and thumb cradling his chin thoughtfully. ''I'll have the...chocolate bubble tea. Yeah, that sounds pretty good! Thank you, Kahr. You're too kind.'' Eyeing the waitress who had a ''help me'' look plastered behind her cheery visage, clearly forced to carry on with her theme act, Liang chuckled lightly but hid it by bringing his fist to his mouth and clearing his throat. The woman bounced off to get his beverage and the glass of water for the bio-android. Now that they could focus on their discussion with the waitress occupied, Liang figured he'd get things started with the most comfortable entry he was aware of. ''So, you must have a load of questions for me. Is there anything in particular you'd like me to answer?'' He figured if he allowed Kahr to take their own pace in the conversation, he could follow that pace to keep things as little nerve-wracking as possible for the recruit. Joining KAOS came with a lot of curiosity about their situation as a whole, and he'd be happy to help clear the air whether it meant talking about other members or talking about the organization itself, or even just answering curiosities about himself.

"Certainly... Liang, thank you."
Kahr smiled as the Captain sat down and ordered - things definitely seemed to be going better than they had dared to hope they might originally. The talk of teamwork gets a slow, solemn nod from the Bio-Android. "I was designed to work primarily independently." Kahr admitted, "But Doctor Vronts knew the value of teamwork as well. He would often talk to me about how important it was to remember that my efforts would be directed to support others, not myself. That sensation of belonging to something bigger than the individual, working together for a greater goal? That is what justifies my existence."
It is a slightly odd turn of phrase, there; some other people might say that is what they live for, or what gives their life meaning - but Kahr does give the impression that they pick their words very carefully. Their existence in this world is something that needs justification; that they are Imperfect only made that fact strike home more clearly to them. They had to believe that by serving the greater goals of the Blue Banner Army, that could in some way help to validate their right to life, despite their many flaws.
The tendril in the tea withdrew back into the Bio-Android's wrist, and Kahr folded their hands on the table in front of them. Soft yellow eyes meet Liang's with a touch of embarrassment in them. Kahr definitely has inhuman elements in their bearing; the tentacles are the most obvious, but their eyes are a dead sign too - no human could have eyes like that... predatory, almost bestial, and yet betraying the burgeoning intellect within. Kahr's voice was very soft, and very low as they speak up again.
"Actually, that is what I wanted to talk to you about, mostly."
There was a beat - a hesitation, before Kahr continued.
"I have been working with Squad E-23 in order to train myself and train their reaction to ki-empowered fighting scenarios." Kahr explained, "I do not know if you are familiar with Captain Gruber? But, at first, I felt that we were enjoying the experience of working together. Unfortunately, as our training has continued and I have begun to get the upper hand on herself and her soldiers... I am afraid I have upset her somehow, and I do not understand why. I thought it was just because I hurt her, but she hurt me without hesitation! I think that is expected in training exercises, is it not?"
Kahr took a deep breath, and looked out the window, running their fingers through their long hair as they do. This was a difficult thing to talk about! More so than they had anticipated. Until three months ago, though, they had only ever spoken with the Doctor and the Computer. Perhaps it wasn't that difficult to understand why the intricacies of all these social situations continue to slip through their fingers. Yes, the Computer had done all it could to help Kahr understand how to infiltrate enemy bases and extract information from vulnerable targets... but that was all theory! In practice, these humans continue to seem virtually impenetrable to the Bio-Android's under-developed sense of social etiquette.
Finally, Kahr just came out and said it:
"You are well-respected by the men and women under your command. How do you build good relations with ordinary soldiers, Liang?"

With the brief pause as Kahr began to spoke, the human smiled; it seemed the being still wasn't entirely used to the prospect of not calling him ''Sir'', but that was quite alright. It was somewhat of an unorthodox thing for many of the junior members of KAOS, both those who had gone (or in Sage's case, passed away) and those who had stayed. He was happy to hear that Kahr's primary directive was not to fight for itself, even though the being operated independently; it was a funny glaring similarity between the two of them. There had been many times when Liang had set off on his own to train or had engaged in combat without support simply because he believed the cause of the Banner, and it led him to push himself to amazing heights of power. As the pair's eyes met, Liang found himself with a sudden interest; it was almost like he could sense something primal beneath the walls of Kahr's eyes, something beast-like even. But the pleasant conversation he had been holding with the bio-android stood as a stark contrast to anything of the sort. He found himself particularly interested in what further things Kahr felt the need to say, and he had a feeling he was going to be surprised with what he was going to end up answering. When the pause came, he took on a focused listen as his drink arrived. He lifted it calmly and took a sip, enjoying the sweet flavor. Keeping the beverage at rest in his hand, he stayed focused.
''Captain Gruber? I'm familiar, yeah. When I first joined the Banner, Gruber didn't seem all that fond of me either. In either case, it could be that the Captain's a bit jealous of you. I know that might sound simple and a little too good to be true, but you'd be surprised how far an emotion like that can motivate somebody. I even find myself jealous of the Administrator from time to time, but I direct that into motivation instead of lashing out like Gruber sounds like she's doing.'' He hadn't been around the Captain for some time and when he was it was in short visits so he couldn't say for sure. All he knew was that he was familiar with the sting of jealousy, and from hearing the situation it hit a little close to home. Trying to picture things from Gruber's shoes, he saw how it could be a bit frustrating; operating a specialized unit where a new up and comer in KAOS technically had authority over not just you but your entire squad had to be a little daunting, but it was the way things were. Members of KAOS weren't chosen just for strength alone. They all had something special and unique to set them apart, which made them as a whole even stronger than they were separate. Could it have been Gruber was possibly upset over not being included in KAOS? He'd already made a note of his opinions, but maybe Kahr could find the answer easier in time since the being seemed a bit more familiar with the unit leader.
The next question was fairly humbling. He had to think way back to when he was first assigned his unit, freshly recruited into KAOS. It wasn't an any thing for he or the soldiers he commanded to adjust to each other. To them, he was some green rookie given operational freedom (within reason) of their lives and well-being. Meanwhile, he could feel the distrust and concern which only made him push himself farther to prove he was worthy of being trusted, which is why he and his men shared such an uncannily friendly relationship to this day. He'd put their safety far ahead of theirs in order to prove they were important and more than just grunts. ''Well, it may sound a bit cheesy, but...'' He cleared his throat after taking a sip of his beverage, then began. ''When I first joined KAOS, my men didn't trust me all that much. In the Banner, actions speak a lot louder than words, at least in my experience. I lead by example, and I showed them that I was more than just the guy barking orders; I was a comrade, and I was fighting for many of the same reasons they were. I won their respect by showing them I valued them, and fighting for them as much as they fought for me. They know I realize they have families I want them to see again, and they know that no matter what happens, i'm as loyal to them as they are to me. I've run rescue operations all by myself to bust out kidnapped soldiers, even. Not only because I care, but because they all care too. I showed them that even though i'm the one in charge, that doesn't make them any less important as individuals.''
He smiled fondly, then continued.
''Whenever I would train at a base, I had them train with me. It didn't have to be sparring; advanced fitness training usually did the trick. I let them spar with each other, not with me unless I was challenged to a friendly match. I had meals with them in the mess hall. I even took time out once to live in their barracks for a while to get a feel for how they live, rather than staying in my own personal quarters at HQ. It let me meld into them on a human level at a more even ground; I could see how things were from their eyes, when a lot of their superiors would rather just leave them to their own devices and enjoy the luxuries of their rank. The result is i'm often cheered on by them, and they all warmed up to me after I put in the work.'' It was a long-winded explanation, but he was clearly assured he'd gone about things the right way; what better way to earn their respect than to share their daily lives and lead by example? It built a sense of camaraderie.

The Bio-Android listens with a rapt attention. As Liang recounts their insights into the Captain’s possible thought process, and his own challenges when he joined the Blue Banner Army, Kahr’s attention may even become a little unsettling. They devour the information that is fed to them, hungrily absorbing the information that their fellow KAOS fighter is happy to impart. It is … fascinating, and it is exactly what they were hoping to learn. Kahr nodded their head as Liang came to an end in his thoughts, and their tentacle snapped back into their wrist with a light, serpentine hiss.
“That was all… very interesting, Liang, thank you.”
Kahr took a few more moments to consider the information in their own context. It was hard to really imagine that Gruber was jealous of them; the woman’s stern demeanour left Kahr feeling numb and afraid, but could that cold mask really be hiding envious thoughts regarding their positions? It was possible… very possible, in fact. Disturbingly plausible.
“I am not sure how I could soothe the Captain’s feelings of… jealousy. If it is in terms of power, then it is unlikely there is much I could teach her usefully. I barely know how to channel my own energy in practice over theory, trying to explain it to another person, especially someone whose cells would function so differently to my own, I think that would be beyond me.”
They pause, considering, before they continue. “If it is simply in terms of rank, then I could offer to place myself at her disposal. I have no illusions about our relative merits. In battlefield situations, she is the woman who would have the most useful insights into how to proceed, and her tactical mind far outstrips my own.”
Then there is the deeper problem.
Liang had won the confidence of his men by showing that he is like them; that he can relate to them on a human level. Until a few months ago, Kahr hadn’t even had full awareness of their physical body, and now that they do, that body is markedly different to the human beings who dominate the rank and file of the Blue Banner Army membership.
Living amongst humans for a short time was plausible, but in the long term? They require food and sustenance that human beings would find distasteful, the gaps in their knowledge of social interactions would become ever more pronounced… even as they consider this issue, the side of Kahr’s neck bulged in a decidedly inhuman fashion, until they were able to squeeze it back down and into place. They raised their hand to their mouth, trying to disguise it as a burp.
Liang had shown that he was, fundamentally, the same as his men. Kahr definitively was not.
“Excuse me.”
A light cough, and then Kahr continued. “It probably does not help that I was cast in the role of monster when I first met the members of the Squad, but I do not think Captain Gruber intended for me to take an active and continuing interest in her Squad. The problem is, I am not human. If I were to live amongst them, they would notice the… differences between us, even more starkly than they already do. On the other hand…”
Kahr’s brow furrowed, as though contemplating a particularly difficult math problem. They thought back to the training they had undertaken, the way that the Captain had managed to bring out the best in the team and rally them against Kahr. Under different circumstances, it would be quite easy to see how that technique could be turned into the basis of camaraderie.
“I can see how surviving battlefield situations would bring the team closer together. The thought of any of those men or women being injured…” Kahr’s hand gripped a little too tight about their glass, and thin, spider-web cracks began to draw themselves along the formerly-smooth surface in an intricate pattern.
“It would distress me greatly. They are good people. That is why I am interested in them and would like to continue working with them. Perhaps I will simply have to insist on assigning myself to their exercises until they see that there is value in what I can offer them.”
That seems to get a firm nod from the Bio-Android, as though the decision had been reached. Inflicting their presence on others went against the fundamentally bashful nature of the Bio-Android, but they were certain that after the first few times they saved the lives of the squad, the squad would begin to appreciate their presence, and may even be in a position to overlook the irregularities in their design.
Until then, they would just have to endure the scorn and disapproval of Captain Gruber. Hopefully it wouldn’t be long before they were all placed in mortal danger!
… Wait, that wasn’t the sort of thing they should be hoping for, was it?

After his heartfelt explanation, he readied himself to answer to the being known as Kahr's replies. He hadn't taken into account the fact that Kahr was likely unfamiliar with a lot of these concepts, but he spoke from experience; the best way he knew how. ''Hey, no problem. It might sound a bit confusing right now, but I think you'll see what I mean once you can start putting those sorts of things into practice. I know my men waited until I proved I could pull my weight and that i'd fight with them shoulder to shoulder before saying as much as two words to me, so maybe you're in a similar situation.'' After paying close attention to Kahr rolling over their options in how to deal with possible jealousy, he nodded confidently. ''It seems like you're already getting a game plan together. That's good; very good, actually. Either way, you'll have a course of action to fall back on. I've noticed being around members of KAOS is a little daunting for our troops. It's almost like they expect us to be these battle-hardened, always-stern superiors when really we're just as much of unique beings as they are. They sort of put this kind of illusion up before you even have the chance to talk to them; they act like they think they know you're going to throw your weight around or something and bark orders instead of do any work, or that you'll look down on them just because you outrank them. Showing them the opposite is true is a really great way to get on the same page, and it lets things develop a lot easier from there on out. I believe in leading by example, so I went out of my way to face every trial they had to so I could relate to them by experience.''
He watched Kahr cough lightly, hiding a reaction to what he very briefly thought he saw to be a lump in the bio-android's neck. Sipping at his beverage, he quieted down to allow the being to continue sharing their thoughts. He nodded along at the explanation and concern; Kahr was cast as some sort of creation from the get go, which had effectively put up a kind of tense barrier between them and the squad they had taken interest in with Gruber. They had mistakenly labeled Kahr as a foreign entity instead of a comrade in arms. It would be a difficult process to break that kind of cycle, but with repeated effort, Liang believed deep down that it was entirely possible to do so. Watching Kahr's glass crack in a formation much like a spider's web at the mention of having any of those in the squad come to harm already showed him plenty about how deep this motivation could go. He smiled, folding his arms with satisfaction as he leaned back to relax in his chair. ''Judging by what happened to that glass just now, i'd say your heart is in the right place. Showing them that motivation is going to be tough, but just keep at it. Persistence is going to repeatedly remind them that you're serious and that you mean the things you say and do. I think you've got a great plan going, personally. Following Gruber's assignments will give you a great opportunity to work alongside and get closer to not only Gruber, but the other individuals of the unit. One by one you'll sway them over, just like I did with mine.'' Out came that genuine, cheery, and friendly smile again. He lifted his glass once more and took a hearty gulp of his beverage which was now about a quarter of the way from being emptied.

Kahr did a double take when they saw the effect they’d had on the glass. It was a little embarrassing that they’d done that without noticing. They’d really have to make sure they kept a closer eye on that in the future. Very carefully, the Bio-Android put the glass back down on top of the table, and offered a nervous smile to Liang. At least the Captain didn’t seem to be judgemental at all; it was surprising how comfortable they were. Perhaps there was more common ground between them than they would have expected. That was… oddly reassuring under the circumstances.
“I see.” Kahr said, after listening carefully to what the Captain had to say. “Perhaps I will have to see about learning some techniques to support them easier in the field… although I suspect I have already begun to dispel whatever false ideas they had about me.”
Kahr let that hang in the air for a second or so, musing on how difficult it had been for them to learn the comparatively easy techniques they’d basically copied from their battles to date. Learning one entirely from scratch would be an interesting challenge… but it might also be completely impossible. They’d just have to experiment with it.
“I do not have a heart.” The Bio-Android continued, “Technically, the fluids which constitute my blood are kept in motion through a complex series of ki-laced…” Again, they start to fade off, meeting Liang’s eye and looking just a little bit embarrassed of themselves. “Oh. You meant in the sense that my intentions are pure. I think I have just had longer to consider them in a vacuum.” Kahr smiled again, brushing their hair out of their eyes, “I do not think most creatures have a long enough period of time to consider what their place in the world should be before they are thrust into it.”
They feel that this requires some explanation, and so they continue, waving one hand vaguely. “I was given many years to … gestate and consider my place in the world before I had any direct interaction with it. Humans are formed over a thirty seven to forty two week period, on average, and are not fully developed when they emerge into the world. I knew in general terms what to expect. I also knew that I had been designed as a weapon, and that sadly I am… not fully formed in the way my Creator envisioned.”
Their smile probably seems a little creepy at this point, though they are talking in a relatively relaxed fashion as they walk Liang through the foundation for their way of life. “You see, I had a choice. I could choose to attempt to use violence in order to Perfect.” There’s something in that word – the way it is spoken, with a kind of reverence, “Myself and complete my Creator’s original design, but aside from the fact that I am not confident I would remain myself if I did that, how could I justify ending lives which have their own ambitions merely in order to fuel my own? Most life is given the simple purpose to perpetuate more life. That is impossible for me, and in lieu of pursuing my Perfection I needed an alternative goal.”
There is a moment of hesitation before they continue, though the smile remains – possibly because Kahr has forgotten that they are smiling at this point, as wrapped up in their explanation as they are. “It seemed to me that I needed a way to justify my existence. I would like very much to discover who was responsible for the murder of my Creator and … discuss, things with them, for instance. This would justify my existence through the pursuit of justice in the name of the one who created me. However, that would only justify my existence up until that point. The Doctor always dreamed that there might one day be no need for weapons. Peace. I am not yet certain if such a dream is realistic, but if it is, I believe the Blue Banner Army and our methods are the surest way to obtain it. Such a thing would also require my existence for many years… which I consider a bonus.”
That seems to be the end of their little speech, and, indeed, the end of the smile, as their eyes drift back towards the broken glass. They’ll have to pay for that.

Now things were starting to get interesting. It seemed his earlier strategy he'd settled on had worked to a fine degree, as the bio-android before him seemed to become much more comfortable where ''they'' were once a bit more sheltered beforehand. The human smiled silently in the realization, and listened intently, leaning forward slightly for his body language to convey his interest. It was a reflexive and natural thing, of course. The biotic had changed into more personal subjects, and what he was hearing really opened his eyes to Kahr's way of life and mindset, if only through a brief window that may have barely scratched the surface. It reminded him of before the days of his time in the Banner, where he wandered the continents in search of fighters to form bonds and friendships with and brighten his understanding of the world at large and the vast differences in the people who called the Earth home. ''Well, also keep in mind that techniques don't necessarily have to be of a supportive nature to be supportive, if you get what i'm saying. Say if you trained hard to learn how to rapid-fire your ki in a charged barrage, for instance. It sounds offensive oriented at first, but it all comes down to your battle plan and strategy! Something like that would make for great covering fire, not to mention kick up a lot of dust and smoke for your comrades to move with all the freedom in the world. Not to brag, but my Chaser is nice in a team environment because I can remotely control where it travels after I fire it. While they're worried about that thing following them around, they're not looking for anyone else so intently anymore.'' His aspiring sensei attitude was leaking through, so he cleared his throat after the remark and got back to shutting his yap and listening like a good friend would!
He smirked after Kahr claimed they were without a heart, knowing the revelation would probably sink in soon over what he actually meant. He'd have to spend more time around Kahr in the future; he had a certain romanticized way of speaking that he found was pretty tough for more literal people to pick up on, mostly Androids and their bio-organic cousins. He seemed particularly interested after that in the explanation of how Kahr came to be, noting that most species had a gestational period where they needed to develop to begin understanding the world; with the bio-android, it was quite the opposite, or so it seemed. He considered the vast differences coming into being in such a way had to create. Kahr had been fully aware and conscious from an early stage, meaning they did not develop in an ordinary way along other individuals like them. Most likely, information that would be gathered naturally by growing up in the usual way was more or less imprinted into them. Without experience to go along with the knowledge though, it was fairly easy to understand all the literal translations going across from the words he'd been speaking. Drumming his digits absent-mindedly on the table out of sheer habit, he nodded as he listened to the further explanation; the complications in becoming ''Perfect''.
After awaiting the being to finish, he took a slight breath inward for a long-winded reply. ''I think I see what you're saying. But, maybe you're taking the road to this perfection of yours a little too literally? Yes, it is unfortunate that lives have to end in order for you to progress, but consider the other side of the situation too. There are vile, evil people out there that exist only to strip life from the world and take what they want without question. I saw such a being before; a Saiyan, who had achieved a legendary golden form. He arrived in West City and his power was unimaginable to me at the time. The Administrator stepped in with a sign-on partner to bring him down, and they succeeded. The road you follow doesn't necessarily mean you have to ''use'' good people to continue following it. With the Banner, we're likely to meet some pretty tough and monstrous individuals. In my eyes, you'd be taking bad out of the world and replacing it with your good, if that makes sense.'' He took a short breath to allow for his insight to sink in, possibly opening up some other angles of thought for Kahr before continuing.
''I'd say that sounds like a fine bonus. But if that peace ever comes, i'd hate the thought of you being at a loss of what to do. There's a lot more to a life than an objective, you know? In the end, it's about living. It's about experiences, and spending time with the people you grow to care about. It's always a good thing to have a goal in mind, but sometimes you just have to set aside some time to take everything in and live a little; to have fun and enjoy the things around you, and spend time with the things that captivate your interest.'' He offered a kind smile, whether his words were going to hit home or not. He didn't account for the fact that Kahr may well far outlive many humans like him walking around even today; he never was up to snuff on all that science-y junk.

Kahr listens respectfully to Liang; the human had some interesting things to say. The mention of the Administrator and his battle against a Super Saiyan is particularly interesting to Kahr. They had met the Administrator briefly before, but they hadn’t yet had an opportunity to see what he was capable of in a truly dangerous situation. It would definitely be worth studying, even if it was likely to be a rather, disturbing, level of strength to constitute a true threat to such a powerful being.
“I understand what you mean.” Kahr said at last, “And it is… a hopeful perspective. The problem is that when I take someone into myself, when I… absorb, them, it is not entirely true to say that I replace them. I do not get to pick and choose the parts of a living organism which becomes a part of me. If I did, I would be able to take only their power, and that would be for the best.”
As they say this, Kahr runs their finger around the edge of their glass, absently tracing it and making the light sparkle against the thin cracks in its surface.
“Unfortunately, when I absorb someone, I take all that they are. So far, it has not proven difficult to separate their … thoughts, ambitions and desires from my own. I worry that if I were to consume someone who was too strong, though, they may have an undue influence on me. Indeed, I am already concerned that who I am… is not separate from who I have absorbed. If I mix with a destructive person, that may make me more destructive. Would I even still be myself, in that case?”
There’s the faintest shrug from the bio-android, and their smile returns, at least a ghost of it. More genuine, perhaps, in that there’s a certain sadness in those inhuman yellow eyes – Kahr had been haunted by their failures with the Blue Banner Army personnel, but they had also been haunted by the ghosts of the people they’d eaten, and questions about whether they had any right to exist. It was a rather heavy topic, and one it was uncomfortable to think about too closely. Better to focus on the lighter subject, then; like the meaning of life.
“I have enjoyed exploring the Earth.” Kahr said, slowly. “I have met many interesting people, and I have only been given freedom in the past few weeks. Perhaps you are right. There is no intrinsic need for me to pursue objectives. I will not blink out of existence if I do not. Perhaps I can justify life, by choosing to… enjoy, life?”
They sound less sure of that conclusion by the end. It seemed somehow indulgent to the bio-android, the idea that you might be able to live just because you want to live. It had been designed to find meaning in being given orders, after all – but the Doctor’s designs hadn’t come to pass perfectly, and there were things that Kahr was finding enjoyment in which they had chosen to pursue purely for their own benefit.
Like bubble tea with a friend.

While Liang was happy that his words were getting through, it seemed there were more complications to his advice transferring over into a meaningful perspective than he could have figured. If it was true that bio-androids could possibly take on inner changes according to the ones they absorbed, it certainly was a risky prospect. He frowned momentarily after hearing that. So far, all he personally had needed to gain strength was the hardest work he could muster, and continuing effort to continue to grow; he couldn't imagine how it would have felt to have his own progress blocked by the need to...''consume'' other beings. He imagined it being incredibly stressful; after all, with that exchange came the prospect of becoming stronger, sure, but with a possible heavy price to pay until you could properly acclimate to the evil beings you had absorbed, if you even could at all. His mind was wracked for a possible solution and answer, but he was finding the words tough to form. He could only offer one real answer to serve as an alternative to physical training that may help, a method he had used only several times seriously since learning the inner workings of it from a Saiyan named Daiki long ago, before he had even mastered the most basic of a human's power increases known as the Intense Struggle. ''Have you ever heard of meditation? It's a method of training that focuses on your inner self, instead of your exterior body. You focus your mind to be crystal clear and manipulate your energies during self reflection and inner study, rather than externalizing it to put stress on your body to grow stronger. It isn't a common method, but maybe, just maybe, after you've absorbed someone it could help you retain...well, you? Of course i'm inexperienced with how that process of absorption must feel and how it would effect you, but there has to be some way to elevate yourself above the qualities of those you take in, right?''
He looked hopeful; it was clear by even the look in his eyes he was desperate to help his new friend find a solution. He knew what it was like to feel as if you'd hit a roadblock, and how it felt when those around you were so much stronger. In West City, he'd taken more of a non-combatant role and focused on objectives; he didn't feel he was strong enough to provide aid anywhere else. It was a crushing feeling, and his personal relation to knowing how it felt made him sympathize with how Kahr may potentially come to feel that way at some point. Meditation was unconventional and many people were more focused on training their body over their mind, but it could be equally effective. He hoped his hunch was correct in that it might be able to help Kahr suppress the qualities and desires of those they absorb, but in the end, there was no way for him to know for sure. He perked up when the subject was switched to a lighter tone of conversation. Even though it seemed as if Kahr was less sure by the end of the realization as it came out more in the form of a question, the human was supportive anyway. ''It probably does sound kind of weird, huh?'' He smiled. ''I don't think i'd have ever gotten to where I am without forming friendships and having people who cared about me and depended on me. I'm still ever-focused on the Banner and i'll always be ready for action at a moment's notice, but I consider the Administrator and Cipher two of my closest friends. There's a big difference with me in training just to keep pace, or training so I can watch their backs in the field. I'd say I spend just enough time with them outside of bases as I do inside.''
Gulping down the last of his bubble tea, he sat the glass down gently and took in a refreshed breath of air.

Kahr nodded their head at the mention of meditation. It wasn't something they'd tried overly hard to master, but it was something they were aware of; being continuously aware of every cell in their body did require a certain degree of mental focus, and their long gestation period could be likened to a prolonged meditation session. Inner focus was definitely an important thing to master when their body felt so uncomfortable and incomplete otherwise.
"You are probably right." Kahr said, "I will turn my attention towards more meditative efforts in future. Perhaps if I am able to master that art, I will be more comfortable with the idea of consuming other sentient beings."
It is a strange sentiment to be sure, but one that Kahr genuinely means. If they were to complete the Doctor's work, they would need to do it at some stage - indeed, when they were particularly hungry, it was difficult to fight the urge to consume targets of opportunity as they presented themselves already. It would be impossible to continue to fight that urge forever, though. If they were going to get better - if they were going to master themselves and obtain Perfection - they would need to do it through acceptance of those urges, not just denial as they had been attempting to so far.
Kahr's eyes drifted down to see that Liang has finished his tea, and with that, the bio-android smiled and stood from the table.
"Thank you very much for your help, Liang. I feel much better about my role in the Blue Banner Army, and where I should direct my training going forward. If there is ever anything that I can do to help you in reaching your goals, please do not hesitate to contact me. I hope that we may become very good friends, as well as allies."
Kahr was about to bow - but something stopped them just before they did. Instead, they gave a wave, a loose smile drawing itself on their features as they did, and then turned to leave. "See you around!" Liang didn't seem the sort to appreciate over formality - a more gentle and relaxed approach would clearly help him feel more at ease.
See? Kahr is learning! It is probably a good thing.

It did seem his half-knowledgeable advice was hitting home somewhere with Kahr, and that much was a comfort in and of itself. If there would be anything he could think of to help keep Kahr ''in control'', so to speak, after absorbing someone particularly nasty, it certainly would have been meditation. It was all about self reflection and mastery over your own spirit, and your mind played a pivotal role in the process. He blinked as Kahr rose from the table after noticing his drink had been finished, and figured he would take that as the bio-organic's cue to leave. They probably had plenty to think about after this long, pleasant conversation. It certainly gave the human some things to mull over in his mind as well, and it was accurate to say he was likely just as humbled if not more so than Kahr was. He smiled toothily at the being to return the thanks. ''Hey, no problem! If you ever need anything feel free to contact me again. I'm happy to help out where I can. The Banner's come a long way since i've joined, I can't even imagine how it would feel being moved into the KAOS unit now as compared to when I was.'' He already considered the being a friend, if a quirky one. It was interesting to meet someone so outside of his own lifestyle for once. He watched as the bio-android halfway went for a respectful bow before stopping themselves and offering a more simple, casual farewell. It seemed Kahr was many things, and a quick learner was one of them. He smirked and offered a simple wave back. ''Take it easy, Kahr! Hope to see you again soon!'' Re-posturing himself in his chair, he let out a sigh of a bit of nervous pressure; it was the first time a KAOS member had directly requested to meet with him outside of training, after all. He scooted forward and eyed the two glasses at the table, his pristine empty one as well as the cracked one Kahr had left behind. Fishing around in his pockets for a few loose zeni, he scooted the currency casually over to the glass and ordered himself a refill of his bubble tea. After the bit of pressure he'd done fairly well to hide, he decided to take in the environment around him and scope out the area; and by ''area'', he meant the inhabitants, particularly the female ones. The cute waitress made her way back over, where he quickly apologized for the glass. ''Sorry about that, I was meeting up with an old friend and my clumsiness got the better of me. I hope that covers the glass!'' He bowed his head in apology even though he took the heat for his new friend. ''Nyao problem! I'll be right back with your refill~!'' The quirk that came with her job was a little annoying, but she was pretty cute anyway. He straightened up his posture and put on his best game face as she made her way back with his drink. Taking a sip, he smiled up at her, catching a glance that made them both share an awkward laugh. Opening up a little, he scratched at the back of his neck before rolling his eyes back up to catch a glance again. ''So, uhm... i'm Liang. Would you want to do something sometime?''
''I'm off in a few hours if you want to stick around!''
AWESOME.
