Name: Tomata
Alias: Red - some people call her by this nickname as a term of endearment. Pureblood elitists sometimes call her that derisively to emphasize that she’s obviously a hybrid.
Species: Hybrid - Half-saiyan, half-human (saiyan is more dominant aside from appearance-wise). Has a slightly weaker version of zenkai & tail weakness as a result of her half-saiyan side, will gain techniques every 5000pl rather than 6000 due to being half-human.
Gender: Female
Age: 19
Appearance: Tomata’s most notable feature is her thick, curly, bright red hair. Dry, it’s just past her waist in length. It's longer when wet. Her tail fur is bright red as well, and when she turns into her Oozaru form, the fur is red. Her eyes are blue, and her skin is fair. She’s average height for a Saiyan female, with a slightly less muscled build and slightly more curves due to her part human heritage. When not in her standard armor that she’s usually found in, she likes to wear clothing that balances femininity with practicality.
History:
Tomata’s mother, Aspara, was somewhat unusual for a higher class Saiyan, in that she was more academically inclined than most warriors. She still had the fighting instincts shared by all Saiyan warriors, and the strength and skill to handle herself well in battle. What she also had was a great deal of curiosity and a desire to understand the universe. She took apart machines only to put them back together again, simply because she wanted to know how they worked and how all the parts fit together. She pursued a career, becoming an expert in assessing what natural resources a planet had to offer, the technology available, and what threat level its inhabitants posed, as well as their usefulness. It suited her. Unlike her elder brother Courne, she was happiest exploring. Courne did share some of her academic inclinations, but his interest was in history.
It was on one of her exploration missions that her ship malfunctioned. Aspara was forced to fly her ship toward the nearest planet - Earth. She crashed badly, and were it not for being a high class Saiyan, she likely would have perished. As it was, she was a bloody mess. A young human doctor named Dr. Needl Sharpe pulled her out of the wreckage and nursed her back to health. Although she initially assumed that Needl’s compassion was a weakness, Aspara learned that this human was far more strong willed and even physically stronger than she initially gave him credit for. Needl didn’t hesitate to order her to rest and get stern with her when she ignored his orders. He also trained in his free time.
As Aspara recovered, she began the long process of repairing her ship. She became progressively more intrigued with Needl while staying with him. Needl quickly learned that having dates over at his home was a bad idea. Even when she’d been busy for the rest of the day with training and repairing, Aspara would seemingly drop everything to sit right there in the room and make everything awkward. At first, he thought it might have been a cultural difference between Saiyans and humans, but eventually he caught on that Aspara was jealous. Despite insisting that human courtship was ridiculous, Aspara was delighted when Needl took her on a date.
It didn’t take the two long to get married, and a little over nine months later, their daughter was born. Needl had always called his curly hair “tomato red”, so when their daughter was born with a tuft of curly red hair on her head, Tomata was the most fitting Saiyan name Aspara could think of. Being high class Saiyans, Aspara’s family wasn’t entirely pleased that she’d chosen a human rather than a Saiyan for her husband, but the respectable power level Tomata was born with was enough to convince them that there was no shame in having a hybrid in the family.
Once Aspara’s ship was fully repaired, she and Needl were at a crossroads. Although Needl had trained enough in a gravity chamber that he’d be able to survive Planet Vegeta’s higher gravity easily, he had an obligation to his patients, just as she had an obligation to the Saiyan Solar Empire. Aspara agreed to visit as often as her duties would allow. The greatest point of contention became what to do with Tomata. Aspara and her family wanted Tomata to grow up on Planet Vegeta. Needl and his sister Scalpelle (also a doctor) wanted her to grow up on Earth. In the end, it was the Oozaru transformation that decided things. Aspara would have primary custody, and would bring Tomata with her whenever she visited. They would also make sure they weren’t on Earth during the full moon. That was just beneficial to everyone.
Growing up on Planet Vegeta, Tomata faced discrimination. Her family’s high class status and acceptance of her shielded her from some of it, but not all. Some people called her halfie and mocked her appearance. Some shunned her. Most commonly, people assumed she was less capable. Any flaws she showed were attributed to her being a hybrid. She had to work hard to be better than many full blooded Saiyans her age just to be regarded as their equal. She was passed over for opportunities sometimes. Most of it, while upsetting and hurtful, wasn’t physically harmful. There were those among the elite who thought Aspara shouldn’t have mated with a human, but of those who held those beliefs, few actually wanted Tomata to be hurt or killed. The few extremists who did, however, really wanted harm to come to the hybrid child and actively made an effort to ensure it would happen.
On two separate occasions when Tomata was a toddler, elite warriors attempted to “erase the mistake”. Little Tomata was saved by the timely arrival of family members in both cases. Aspara was particularly brutal. She publicly beat the man bloody, mocked his elite status, remarking that if he was seeking out small inexperienced children for opponents instead of true elites, that perhaps his bloodline wasn’t what it used to be, then finished him off with a ki blast through the chest. From then on, there were no overt attempts on Tomata’s life, but there were a few indirect ones.
The first indirect attempt was a cruel dare from a teenage Saiyan old enough to know that high danger planets for elite Saiyan warriors to conquer were no place for children, much less for children to go alone. The older girl dared Tomata to steal a ship and go on her own to prove that she was a “real” warrior. She should have died there. The odds were against her. And yet, Tomata’s determination got her through it. She wasn’t in good shape when she returned home, but she was victorious. Attitudes toward her began to shift slightly, then. If nothing else, the child was not a weakling. The next attempt was “accidentally” sending her on a mission higher than appropriate. The man claimed it was because of her past victory. Tomata came back in even worse shape than the first time, but she returned victorious once more. The next couple of times, her ship was inadequately stocked. Afterward, people gave up on trying to kill her. She’d proven herself strong and clever enough to be useful. Her continued survival could no longer be attributed to sheer dumb luck.
Life on Planet Vegeta was a struggle. Her visits to Earth were a vacation. She was accepted and loved unconditionally, and was able to be as close to a normal child as a little girl with a tail and superhuman abilities could be. There were times that Tomata thought about staying with her father, but ultimately they were only thoughts. A peaceful life without struggle seemed boring to her in the long term. Besides, attitudes toward hybrids were beginning to shift on Planet Vegeta. Wasn’t it up to her to help it along so that other hybrids didn’t have to deal with what she did?
Though she spent more time living with her mother and maternal relatives, her visits with her father and aunt on Earth still had an impact on her. They nurtured her intelligent side, giving her books to read with every visit. They also nurtured her compassionate side, teaching her that compassion was not a weakness, and instead was a strength. She learned how to use ki to heal from her father and aunt, and became proficient with it over the years. And in that, Tomata found her calling.
Unlike some of her full blooded peers, Tomata never enjoyed conquest or killing. She adored a challenge,, yes, and genuinely liked to fight and win, but she didn’t have a taste for conquering, and especially not for killing those weaker than her. Those were things that she only did if directly commanded to, and she was always mercifully quick about it. As she grew older and deemed ready for greater responsibility, she felt more inner conflict over it. She wanted to be strong, but she also wanted to be kind. The solution was to become a battle medic. The field of medicine was not a popular one for Saiyans, despite the many injuries they incurred through fighting. As such, despite her young age, Tomata was able to become a full fledged medic. She didn’t stop there, though. She made it a personal goal to become both a great warrior and the best medic anyone in the universe had ever seen.
