This time of season brings out a lot in this town. Nights would become longer, the winds growing colder and the leaves would change color over the months. It hadn't been too long since ghosts appeared, but at the same time, most were expecting these stories not to last too long. Plenty of things this rundown place had didn't last through a whole year, and it didn't seem like these ghost stories would fair much better. There were others who still held onto hope, already feeling inspired by the lone acts of a wandering soul, one who brings vengeance to others.
However, this was still a season of monsters.
Ever since he had been hearing the rumors and hearsay, the kids of the town had been drawn to these woods on the outskirts of their home. It has been said that this was the place where all sorts of the supernatural could be found, where fractured lights would flicker and things lurked in the dark. There would always be a fair share of debunkers, even among the young, but even they would grow curious enough to put those stories to the ultimate test. Their imaginative minds would race with all the haunting imagery that seeped into each and every head, deeply taking in the cold air that surrounded them when they ventured in. Jason lowered himself on one knee and plopped down a backpack, rummaging through it as his eyes occasionally looked up into the distance.
Jason, along with his friends, would become the latest to explore the woods beyond. However, they had their eyes set on one particular legend.
He and the others didn't really carry much; a flashlight, notebook, and another peculiar bag of unknown intent. His group certainly weren't going to run head-first into the grave without the proper sacrifices. One of the other kids, Drake, made a note to update his followers on his findings as soon as he could, making sure that everything that Jason and his friends were going to do went down perfectly. Sitting on the ground and gnawing down on his flashlight, he made some quick scribbles into the book as he took in the eerie atmosphere. If anything strange was lurking, weirder than usual, here would be a good start.
An hour would pass as he ventured forward, not finding much of anything but keeping the others at bay in case of anything. Jason certainly wasn't going to give up on his "quest" yet, though the silence was starting to get to him. He would ask you to forgive him if his attempt at whistling made you want to stab yourself (or someone) in both ears, but he wasn't the type of person to really care. In a way, it eased the tension, but only slightly. As far as he knew, it's just been a few kids, a large bag, and the great and eerie outdoors of the crappy city they live in.
"Alright. Bring out the geek and the shovels."
A lone fire stood within the ominous woods, the moon gazing down on it. It was only a few hours before midnight, but there were a group of four kids who wanted to share their secret festivities early. One of them, a red-haired girl no older than ten, had her own bag full of store-bought candy. Her heart was racing as she started into the hole the other kids dug a few hours ago, already filled with bagful of candies as she prepped herself for what was to come. They told her about the legends, of a monster who would do one's bidding at the hefty cost of the finest sweets one could find. It thrived in fear, and yet, it never seemed to harm anyone.
If anything, it existed to punish others who harmed and harassed the innocent with a bit of wicked fun. A legitimate business, as the stories of the monster would say. Becky had always been curious about the legends, even if her parents thought she was being incredibly silly. Vanessa, her sister, was much more worried about her wandering to the outside of the city and getting herself hurt. God forbid that her sister ever ended up lost in these weird woods. Being so popular in school, though, she wasn't always around for her little sibling.
It was just as well, as Becky snuck away and came here without much hurt feelings. Still, she was deathly afraid.
The truth is, though, the girl didn't exactly come here of her own free will. The other kids who were with her, three boys and another girl, were her tormentors. The legend of the "vengeance monster" was one that the kids loved to scare each other with during the season, but no one could prove exactly if such a fiend ever existed. This would all change tonight, however, with a handheld camera at the ready. "Little Miss Redhead" was some loser the three kids knew well from school, and would make for the perfect bait (or sacrifice). The taller boy, Gabe, pushed the poor girl forward, growing more impatient by the moment.
"Move already, Becky! I don't wanna be here longer than I need to."
Becky's face fell inches away from the hole, her crumpled bag of candy getting slightly crushed under her stomach. She can already hear the others calling her by the usual names, but she couldn't exactly run away. Becky had enough bruises, broken glasses and bloodied noses for one day, and she was wasn't inclined to add any more. She took a deep breath, raising her bag of candy over the hole as she closed her eyes. A moment of silent dread came over everyone as she finally let the bag slip away.
Unfortunately for her, it stopped right at her feet and nowhere near the hole. Jason wasn't amused, quickly making was way towards her with a clenched fist. "Beck, I don't exactly feel much commitment here, right now." He started to get closer to her lowered head, his hand reaching the back of her head and forcing her to meet eye contact. "If you need a bit of motivation, I'm sure my fist and I can --"
"Oh, grow the hell up, Jason." Becky and others turned to the girl that was with them, Jason's scowl refusing to leave. Maddy had always been the anchor for her brother, even if she was just as morally questionable. "You always have to waste your time on the runts?"
"I have my ways, sis." Jason snarked back.
Maddy simply rolled her eyes, pushing back Jason and looking at the somber Becky. "You know what's going to happen to you if you don't play along. We're all, uh...scientists, we're all as...curious as you are." Maddy couldn't help but crack a laugh, the others surrounding Becky chuckling as well. "We just wanna help you out. Now be a dear, say the words for the stupid ritual and we can all go home." She knew full-well that the whole thing was a crap excuse to pick on Becky (not that they feel they needed any), but she really wanted to start getting home already.
Becky sighed, her trembling hands gripping onto the bag once again as she took another breath. The sack slipped away in her hands, landing on top of the rotting sweets as the freezing winds blew. The witching hour was at hand. "Mura, I beg of you..."
A dead silence fell over the woods, time itself seemingly coming running still. Becky and the others waited with held breaths, the chill of the air digging into their skin like steel daggers. Minutes, then hours passed them by as tension began to grow between the kids. It was said that he would appear at the stroke of midnight, at the offer of candy and a human sacrifice. It didn't have to be anyone in particular, but according to Beck' bullies, it would be a nice little bonus. They came to figure that no one would miss her, anyway.
It wouldn't be long now before Halloween was official. Becky could feel her feet dragging back, her eyes darting around as she tried to find some way out of this. For all she knew, either her folks or the police could be coming after her. She was also quite worried about some old stranger coming after them, especially considering all the ghostly incidents happening lately. Then again, this was starting to become one of the rare moments where someone like her would want to become a mutant.
"No turning back, Beck," Jason started to call out from behind her. The girl cursed under her breath, caught in a rather hellish situation. "You got us here, you keep clamoring about this stupid legend for years on end, so we are going to wait right here." However, the other kids were beginning to close in on Becky. The girl could feel her heart wanting to jump out and explode like a grenade as the others began to raise their dirt-caked shovels. Becky's eyes widened and welled, terror and disbelief enveloping her.
"W-what is this?," Becky was starting right at Jason.
"Heh. We're actually kinds of impatient people, to tell you the truth." The kids didn't stop walking onto Becky, trembling themselves but still marching. They made their promises days before this all went down, each of them vowing to not back down from what was about to happen. There was no turning back from this, and Jason would have their heads if they tried. "You see, we've all been getting really damn tired of you for a good long while, Beck. High grades, an honor student even, popular sister, always thinking you were better than any of us standing here. Especially me."
"You...you don't have to do this," Becky pleaded to him. Sure, this was all just part of the prank for Jason, but why ruin the not-psychotic-at-all fun of watching a girl squirm with fear and helplessness?
"As a matter of fact, I do. Teach her a lesson." They all charged towards Becky, her life flashing before her. Her mind simply refused to believe that that was going to be how it all ended. She never meant to hurt anyone, nor did she dedicate her own life to making others feel inferior to her. She had her talents, but she was just like anyone else, just trying to live her life as a regular girl. This made her think about putting herself in the shoes of someone...anyone, but even more so, made her think about all of her regrets. She was about to break her family's hearts, especially her sister's.
At this point, she closed her eyes and waiting for the surge of pain to wash over, her body feeling like it was shutting down. She still thought, if she was lucky, she's be alive long enough to say she was sorry to her sister.
The next few moments came in a blur, something inhuman having made its way onto the dark scene unfolding. Becky wouldn't find out right away, being too afraid to open her eyes, but the entire area where she and others stood would be washed over in shadows. It felt like she was carrying a bunch of rocks on her shoulders, the balancing in her feet going wild as she tried to keep herself under control. The other kids were also experiencing disorientation, screaming at each other in fear and frustration. Their shovels clanged onto the ground, one of them trying to reach their phone to call someone -- anyone that would help a bunch of stupid kids at a moment like this.
They did called someone already, however. Someone took the liberty to answer, as it was the season of monsters.
Leaves enveloped the three bullies as monstrous images and distorted screams danced about in the skies and within the skin of the trees and leaves around them. A feeling of dread washed over them, almost like some strange reaction to the atmosphere they were taking in. A dead silence soon came, but before anyone could react or speak, the true horror show would begin. Skeletons and zombies started bursting out from the ground, clutching onto their ankles as the faces of the living dead roared out with hunger. The creatures all seemed to know the names of the bullies, as if this was some sick last-ditch attempt by Becky to get back at everyone. Jason was about to scream out at Becky, to make all of this stop, but what the other children saw was beyond their worst nightmares.
A ball of flame was in place of Becky, sprouting out wings, claws and horns as spiders quickly spun webs around the branches above her. It spelled out some disturbing messages with a sing-song glee;
LEAVE HER ALONE. SHE IS MINE. YOU WILL ALL JOIN HER SOON.
By the time Becky opened her eyes, everyone else was still frozen in place. She wasn't seeing any of the fantastical experiences that the bullies themselves were facing, looking at them in confusion. She could've easily taken the opportunity to run like absolute hell, but something didn't seem right about the situation unfolding before her. Well, nothing about this felt in any way right, but her curiosity was getting the better of her. People like her, in the city and beyond, had a particular knack for heading into life-ending situations in the name of curiosity.
Becky stopped in front of Jason, frozen in place like the others that got hit were. It seemed like some sort of paralysis, red and orange veins popping on their faces and arms. She could see the tears rolling down his face, like he could see and hear what was actually happening outside of their own imagination. While Becky would be lying if she said that none of the bastards had something like this coming, she still had to wonder why she wasn't affected by -- whatever this was -- like the others were. Becky needed to study closer to the phenomenon, but the rest of her body was screaming at her to run. She just needed to see closer, her hand reaching to touch Jason's face.
A shadow quickly tackled Jason down, a grungy laughter escaping from him. He seemed to move as much as his appearance at the corner of Becky's eye would imply; swift and almost impossible to catch. He made his way to the others with relative ease, snatching them one by one before Becky could even have the chance to protest. Becky started to give chase, but then the shadow itself paused and charged right towards Becky herself. The girl would've thought that that would be the end for her, but then the shadow stopped itself -- its wicked smile mere inches from Becky's petrified face. "What--"
Becky couldn't even finish before the shadow disappeared into the woods dragging everyone but her into its sinister plans. The only thing remaining was the blood-curdling screams of her tormentors surrounding her, Becky losing her breath as she started the hear the sound of clanging blades. One by one, the voices began to suddenly stop or fade away, another sound rising above it all. Laughter, the very same one that wrung in Becky's ears like a nightmare coming to life. As quickly as the horror came, it all eventually stopped. For the moment, it seemed that Becky herself was left all alone.
Well, everyone except the shinobi ghost that was right next to her.
Becky screamed out, getting ready to run before the shadow quickly raised its hands and shook its head with laughter. A hand reached into its back and presented something in front of her. It was, of all things, a fresh candy apple on a stick made just for her. At first glance, it seemed that the ghost was as old as her, a sickly smile coming from his carved face like some fairy tale monster. Becky had to wonder if this creep was some kind of monster, or something more terrifying altogether.
"Hey, kid. Glad I got those guys off your back," the ghost said to her, taking a bow. "The great Mura, at your service...and yes, I am real." Mura looked up at Becky, seeing her take the confectionery fruit a little awkwardly. She didn't seemed to be a any more calmer than she was when she was going to get hit by shovel, though after everything that's happened, no one would really blame her. "I...I have so many questions," Becky finally said with her mouth agape, not knowing what the strange figure was going to do to her. "Are you...are you going to hurt me?
Mura simply chuckled, more than thankful for his luck as he looked upon the girl. The air filled with a deafening silence for a few seconds before the specter suddenly laughed even moreso in the girl's face, curled up on the floor as his legs kicked with glee. Well, legends have a tendency to be exaggerated, especially the scary ones. "Nah! Just saw that you were in trouble. It's pretty late and stuff, so you should probably get home"
Mura reaches his hand out to her with a warmer smile. "C'mon...I'll walk you..."
Somewhere in the afterlife, there was a boy deep in slumber. Old horror movie tapes and manga books served as his makeshift bed, influencing his macabre dreams. He held onto his sword like a stuffed animal, having had it his whole life. It's been a while since he's been wandering in his ghost form for this long, but it's all for a very good reason. Soon, his dream would be within his grasp.
Mura's mouth was moving, even as he was deep in his sleep. He often had fantasies like this, becoming the sort of hero he could he in his new state. In truth, though, he's a silly little one with delusions of grandeur. Still, as nice as the Otherworld was, Mura couldn't wait until he could hop on over to the land of the living. With all the stories he's been told, there seems to be plenty of strong people there.
The ninja's eyes began to flicker, mumbling to himself as he looked around his surroundings. "Hm...I'm hungry."
However, this was still a season of monsters.
