It was a good thing Vennel had taken her old battle pod with her before she fled the capital. She had wanted to hold off on using it as much as she could, seeing as it was in such bad shape. Most battle pods could last for what felt like an eternity, seeing as no one ever had problems with their pods being blown up. But that was because most of those pods weren’t series one rust buckets like hers. Many low class saiyans were given these relics, because they were hand-me-downs, or salvaged from spare parts. Hers was no exception. And while it had seen her through many a glorious battle, it’s life expectancy was sort of running on empty.
She’d kept the thing buried out in the wastes of Vegeta, incase of an emergency, and it seemed like now was as much of one as ever. After her little tete-a-tete with those salvagers in the truffle ruins, she knew her presence on her home world was far from a secret. She couldn’t risk staying within the Saiyan Solar Empire’s territory any longer either, since she had once been such an important figure before. People would hear about her at best, and come after her at worst. And she couldn’t have that.
No, Vennel had to escape while she could, but where would she go? Normally she just got her coordinates from the mission’s desk, and then afterward the planet ceased to exist, usually. Or at the very least, just it’s inhabitants did, before the planet was sold off to the highest bidder. But now it apparently seemed like more and more, the power of the universe was getting stronger and stronger. As if some sort of natural law of the universe changed, allowing for new heights of power not seen since ancient times. So going back to her mercenary ways seemed like it was off the table. Not at least, unless by divine intervention she suddenly became more powerful. And to her, training didn’t seem like a worthwhile endeavor.
So making her way frantically through the wastes of Vegeta, the weary Saiyan found her pod, hidden away in a small cave in a rocky outcropping, covered in a tarp and a thick layer of dust and sand. Tearing the cloth off of her transport, she revealed the dented, scarred surface of the once spherical vessel. Sure enough, it still seemed to operate, as she depressed the hatch of the ship, and watched as it slowly opened back out. The interior lights came to life slowly, the blinking light and bleeping noises from the computer array inside revealing it was indeed in working order, if not just barely. Bending down, Vennel wiggled her fingers underneath the battle pod and lifted it up, to carry it out into the open, before she set it back down again. Crawling inside, she watched as the hatch sealed itself again, the hiss of the air pressurizing the cabin, before the glass became a display interface for the ship’s systems.
Now she just had the question of where to go. But she really didn’t care. She brought up a directory of metropolitan planets not within the control of any major political power, and found it a surprisingly small list. She wanted something metropolitan, partly because despite wanting to be alone, a part of her craved the idea of having others there. And because if her ship did indeed break apart in or after reentry to a planet’s atmosphere, she wanted to be able to repair it or at least buy a new ship. After a few moments of scrolling through the pathetically small list, she came across one planet in particular that caught her interest.
Konats.
It was a planet inhabited by a people shattered and broken with their own government in disarray and advanced sufficiently enough she could come across space faring tech. Fitting all her criteria, and also being out of the way enough that she could hopefully avoid seeing any Saiyans or members of the Empire for, with any luck, the rest of her life.
And with the coordinates set, she merely had to press the ‘launch’ button, and she was off. Hopefully she could leave her varied failures behind. Maybe fate would have other ideas in mind, but for now, she was content with her choice. Only time would tell if it was the right one.
