"You know... You've already failed..."
The smell of smoke was the first thing to hit Maeve's nose as she stepped out of the Pendulum room. The demoness' golden eyes narrowed to slits as she looked through the dark corridor that lead to the main stairwell of the lookout. The sweltering heat that surrounded her caused a feeling of dread to pound in her heart. She tried to keep her mind off of things by hurrying down the hallway but ended up stumbling as the entire lookout seemingly trembled. Maeve cast her gaze upward as she saw dust and rubble rain from the roof unto her head. Just what was going on? She had to find out, so she pushed on.
"Even so, remember...This is your fault...I didn't ask for this."
Maeve made step after agonizing step as she rushed through the winding stairs. The higher she went the more the scent of ash and smoke filled her nose until finally she stopped at the library and saw it consumed in a plume of dark smoke. The dragoness felt her headfins jut up in alarm as she took a step back to see the ruinous devastation sprawled out before her. Despite her fears and instinct to try and save what she could she pushed onward and upward till she finally made it to the outside of the lookout.
"You should have known something like this would happen. This is your mistake..."
Maeve's eyes widened in horror. The beautiful blue sky of Earth was tainted and twisted into a deep scarlet color as the Makyo Star practically consumed it. The pungent mix of smells composed of ash, smoke, and freshly spilled blood hung in the air like a miasma making it hard to breathe. The low roar of crumbling debris and the loud crackle of fire filled Maeve's scaled ears as she fully stepped out of the lookout.
...Or, what was left of it.
The sacred platform of the gods was left in shambles. A massive fissure from some sort of blast split the floating structure into two devastated halves that remained suspended in the air from whatever magics were cast to keep the Lookout in it's place. It was as if the destruction had been preserved in one fixed point in time to serve as a monument of the death and despair that transpired.
"No matter how much you try...You cannot deny the truth."
Maeve looked up to see a familiar figure fall to it's knees before another. Though it was hard to make out due to the glare of the Star, he could be recognized even by his sillhoute, the other was an unknown however. The roar of the flames blocked out any words from being heard but the undeniable sight of a blade impaling another spoke more than enough for itself.
Maeve gasped out as she rushed toward the silhouettes. She stopped in her tracks though as the sword wielding fighter stood before her. The fighter was clad from head to toe in silver armor with a red trim. The horned helmet, clawed spiked gauntlets, and runic designs on the armor made it obvious that it was demonic in origin. Maeve looked past the devilish invader to confirm her dread. Bing Gan was the next to be slain by this unknown evil.
"You cannot deny what we really are..."
Maeve grit her teeth and readied her blade. The invader merely flicked the blood free from their blade in a casual manner before pointing it towards it's new challenger. The demoness cried out in a thunderous roar as she lowered into her stance and began to charge her ki. The armored figure shifted it's stance into a defensive one in response as it awaited the oncoming attack. Seeing this only caused Maeve to gather more of her energy however until she finally lowered her knees to prepare her Thunder Thrust. As she launched forward with her opening technique the figure would pull back and deflect the lightning fast lunge with a mighty downward arc of their blade.
The clash of metal filled the air with a high pitched ring as the two sword users met in the first parry of their duel. Before Maeve could recover the crimson clad warrior would step in and crash it's bulky shoulder into her chest. The force of the shoulder check sent the demoness skidding back, her talon like toe claws dug into the tile as she tried to regain her balance only to be sent stumbling back as an elbow crashed against her face. She coughed, a stream of blood spewing from her nose as the figure ground it's elbow up and down in an attempt to dig in the wound before kicking back. Maeve felt herself collapsing from the mind numbing amount of pain that surged from her face but she caught herself by digging Fateburn into the ground in an attempt to steady herself.
"You are a monster."
Maeve spat some blood to the side before lifting her blade from the tiles so she could try to fight back and get the momentum back on her side. She launched forward in a furious counter attack by using her signature technique: The Chaotic Rebellion Star. In an instant, her blade would cut through the air in a blinding blitz aimed to cripple her foe. Maeve's eyes widened however as the mysterious fighter managed to counter each and every one of her strokes with a mirrored technique. Their stance, their movements, and their strikes matched hers in every instance creating a series of crashes that littered the air with a spray of sparks and the high pitched screeches of metal meeting metal.
The armored assailant clicked their tongue behind their helmet before pulling their free hand back and charging a dense sphere of viridian ki in the palm of their gauntlet. Maeve's eyes widened and dilated as she suddenly recognized the attack. She was about to speak out when the warrior suddenly threw the mighty blast her way. Maeve only had time to pull Fateburn up in a desperate attempt to block the attack.
"I am your mistake."
An explosion ripped through the lookout's remains as Maeve was sent flying back into the scar-like fissure that had been etched into it. She let out a choke of agony as she fell into the smoke and cinders of the burning gash. Her body ripped through a few tiles suspended in the air before finally collapsing on a crumbling platform that began to slowly sink down to the Earth below. A groan escaped her lips as she looked to the blood tinted sky. She could feel the demonic pulses of the Makyo Star as the rays showered her from above. Was this fighter really a demon? Were they taking power from the Star just as she did not so long ago? As if to answer her question Maeve would suddenly feel a surge of malevolent energy brewing above her at an alarming rate. It became increasingly obvious to her that the figure was charging something BIG. She had to move. She had to get up. She had to fight.
Maeve stood up and held Fateburn up high. She let out a rumbling snarl that built up into a roar as her blade began to burn brightly with her burning spirit. As she let her soul coat her blade in it's fire she would crouch down and let her aura of black and white ki snake around her form to build up her own attack. She knew the masked fighter would probably feel it and expect her attack but she was sure she could catch her off gaurd and end the fight in one single blow. Maeve yelled out as she lept from her platform unto a nearby tile. Keeping her momentum she would launch herself to a burning book shelf before darting aside to the top of the fissure. Before the armored figure could react Maeve's form would vanish.
In a heartbeat, she would fade back into sight above the warrior. With a mighty cleave the dragoness would use her fall to slam her sword into the head of her foe with enough force to cause the helmet to crack and split down the middle.
"You just refuse to accept it... You cling to denial... But now you must face your failures..."
A mess of ruby locks would fall free from the crumbling helmet's constraints as a pair of silver eyes framed by a soft girlish face were suddenly revealed. The young woman's silvery gaze would lock with the elder demon's golden one as time seemed to stop around the two.
Maeve simply dropped her blade.
The half demon's blade pulsed with a pinkish hue as she stood before the Makyo Star and greedily drank in all the power it could give. A cruel smile played on her lips as she stared at the shock and awe on her mother's face. Just like her father, she knew her Mother hadn't been able to face her at full strength. She knew that she wouldn't be able to look her own daughter in the eye as she finished her off. Her weakness would be her undoing. As her blade devoured the chaotic energies that charged the air she prepared to end it all in one strike.
One more slash would decimate her mother and the pitiful remains of the lookout.
"So what will you do?"
Maeve looked to the attack that was forming and to the sadistic glint in her daughter's beautiful silver eyes. The visage was a wonderful nightmare that left Maeve hollow and numb in it's presence. She tried to form words, feelings, thoughts... Anything...
But...
She was powerless...
"Will you rectify your mistake? At the cost of your joy?"
Maeve took a step forward. Tears building in her eyes as she slowly closed the distance between the two.
The half breed made no move.
"Or will you give up the world you've sworn to protect?"
Maeve stared at her daughter for a long moment before caressing her cheek with the soft underside of her scaled fingers in a loving manner. The simple gesture caused the confident smirk of the demon before her to waver ever so slightly as their eyes met for a long moment. Once more, everything seemed to still as the mother and daughter looked upon each other as if it were the first and last time. Maeve closed her eyes, tears falling down them as she pulled her daughter into a loving embrace.

...
"..I'm sorry."
The half breed suddenly choked as she felt something puncture her chest. Her sword fell to the ground as she pulled away from Maeve's embrace to see the weapon her mother had summoned jutting through her armor. Her eyes turned from dark to fearful as she looked to the blood that began to pour from her wound. She opened her mouth to speak but found her words lost with a final exhale. The half breed fell back as the life faded from her silver eyes.
Maeve rushed forward in an attempt to catch and cradle her daughter but screamed out in agony as the girl's form turned to sand as soon as her hands made contact. Maeve watched through hot tears as the world around her was whisked away. Her hands clenched the last remnants of her daughter till she was left alone in the dark.
She was left with only the sounds of heavy ticking above.
