The terrain of Mount Paozu was an unforgiving wilderness that could test even the most stout of hearts if their luck was not with them. Grand spires of rock dotted the landscape with thick forests, fast flowing rivers, and rocky wasteland filling in the places between. It was common to find a cliff face shrouded over with trees and bushes, the deadly drop unseen until the last, futile moment. And if the terrain itself was not enough the wildlife was especially deadly as well. The things that had adapted to such a wild place were nasty hunters, and most average humans could only flee in terror when the likes of a T Rex or a Saber Tooth Tiger showed itself. Of course many people never got the luxury of having time to flee. Hundreds of people went missing in Mount Paozu every year, and search parties were rarely sent out after them; the bodies are never found anyway.
This particular day Mount Paozu was suffering from the effects of a heavy storm system, and torrential rain poured down over the land, soaking everything through and keeping most of the less-hungry predators in their dens for the day. Thunderclaps filled the air few and far between despite the rain and wind, but struck with enough force to rattle the trees each time. Through this world of gray, down one of the few winding roads in the area, walked a single man, a small bag under his arm and a far away look on his face. It was the look of a man who was thinking heavily, their mind consumed by some inner turmoil, a potentially dangerous thing on Mount Paozu.
Two goals had impressed themselves into the psyche of the human known as Katsu Yuda. One, to recover and ultimately perfect the serum that he and his research team had been working on, and Two, to find the Leader of the Saiyans and beat the shit out them. Which may just be two goals that weren't mutually exclusive. The serum had after all been meant as a weapon to use against the Saiyans in case they had tried to invade the Earth. Ironic then that the Saiyans, who had no idea of the serum's existence, destroyed the lab where it was being researched, killed all of the researchers but one, and forced him to use the serum itself to survive. Katsu definitely wanted to get back at the Saiyans for the loss of such knowledge, and for the loss of those who could have taken Humanity a step farther in their evolution.
The leader of the Saiyans at the time was Zuccetta, an immensely powerful Saiyan who had gained the ability to transcend the limits of a normal Saiyan, even her Oozaru form was so far above the norm for her species that none dare stand against her. THAT was the target Katsu would face if he wanted to mete out justice for the wrongs the Saiyans had committed. So in all likelihood Katsu was going to need to the sort of power the Serum had been designed to produce in order for him to be able to take on someone as powerful as Zuccetta. Fine with him. Katsu wanted to recover the formula first anyway, in memory to the team that had worked on it.
A sudden noise brought Katsu's attention back from his inner contemplation to his surroundings. He shifted the small bag in his hands as he stopped in his tracks and looked about. He knew he had heard something, but he couldn't see anything just then. He stood as still as he could, slowing his breathing nearly to a stop as he continued to listen, waiting. For several seconds there was nothing, only the continued roaring of the wind and the rain pouring down, but from within the bushes and low-lying plants burst forth a rabbit, a young Wolf hot on its trail. Bolting across the road the rabbit was making a mad dash for the uneven terrain of the other side, but Katsu could see that the wolf was far too close, far too fast. Just before the rabbit reached the treeline the wolf managed to latch its jaws onto it, a pitiable wail escaping the rabbit as it was caught. The wolf chomped down hard, and Katsu heard neck-bones snap as the rabbit went limp.
The wolf, finally freed from its singular concentration in the hunt, had just then noticed Katsu with a little jolt. It glared at him, the rabbit dangling from its maw, a deep growl issuing forth. Katsu could only quirk an eyebrow, and the wolf seemed to realize something was wrong, because it backed away, rabbit still clutched in its mouth. As it fled into the woods Katsu could only shake his head. Was his new power really so intimidating to a wolf? Katsu didn't really know how strong animals were considered, but he knew his own power was right around 7,500 units, with an average human being 6-16 depending on their job.
Shaking his head Katsu continued the last of his trek to his home. It was a rather overdone Gothic style mansion; with nearly 35,000 Square footage, and a basement so large Katsu had managed to shove a laboratory down there (granted, he had expanded it nearly eight-fold its original size, but it had been a spacious basement before indeed). Katsu didn't even use most of the building, the entire first floor was unoccupied and empty. It was only the second floor, where Katsu had his bedroom and a crafts room modified into a kitchen, that Katsu tended to frequent.
Yet before Katsu had managed to even reach the front door he realized that there was a security crate placed out front. The thing was big, and reinforced so much Katsu was pretty sure someone could drop a Hydrogen bomb on it and it'd be unscathed. It seemed that the BBA had finally managed to collect and send him all of the data they could salvage from the destroyed laboratory. Good. Katsu could get back to doing his actual vocation rather than sitting in a Hospital Bed eating horrible food. Unfortunately that crate was much too big for Katsu to try and lift it, even with his limited Telekinesis. So Katsu headed on inside his home for now.
Moving past the first floor areas quickly Katsu moved to the entrance to his basement, where a terminal was waiting for his attention. Looking at it he pressed the transponder on and spoke, “Hey Aliza, how long have I been gone now and what's the status of the lab?”
A cool feminine voice, the voice of Katsu's Laboratory caretaker Aliza (A.K.A. Autonomous Life-Support, Inculcation, and Zeteticism AI), quickly answered him, “Welcome home Master. You have been gone for 87 days. The lab is within standard parameters. Subjects 37B, 17F, and 46L will require updated growth parameter input within the next six days or suffer homeostasis failure.”
Katsu frowned a bit as he heard Aliza's report. He had been gone 87 days?! That was far too long. Sure he had spent a month and a half in the Hospital, but where had the other month and a half gone?! Had Katsu really spent all that time at the BBA Lab with his team without coming home once? Shaking his head Katsu decided to put it from his mind for the moment, “I'll make the rounds in half an hour Aliza. I'm sure I need to tidy up around here.”
Clicking off the transponder Katsu first went to grab the box outside, driving a small forklift from his garage (Hey, when you have an underground lab you just have to have some means of moving heavy containers in and out of your home.) around front to pick up the heavy container and moving into the back garage, the one that led to his lab storage room underground. After the container was secured Katsu returned to his second floor, tidying up the whole area, surprised as how much dust had accrued in his time away. Luckily that was the majority of the work needed to get everything cleaned up, and Katsu quickly moved to his kitchen to recycle spoiled food and make a note to purchase certain goods next time he headed towards the market at Trebul.
With all of his more mundane chores done Katsu headed down into his labyrinthine laboratory. There were experiments to be performed, results to be studied and stored, projects to be tended to, and subjects to be cared for. Katsu had near 300 different subjects and active experiments going on in his laboratory at any one time, and it took quite some time to do the full rounds. The better part of the day, in fact. It was nearly 8 PM when Katsu finally finished putting the last touches on Subject 46L's growth mapping, letting Aliza adjust and fine tune the chemical bath 46L was placed in to best facilitate their physical evolution. Sighing in relief that he hadn't lost any of his creations, Katsu placed a hand against the reinforced glass, grinning to himself, “Never want to lose any of you. You have such potential...”
Katsu lamented how most people seemed to avoid moving forward. They were scared of the unknown, as was expected. The unknown can destroy and inflict misery, after all. Yet... They never wanted to make the unknown known! They were too damn busy hiding in their fear that they never thought to try cast a light into the shadow of ignorance. It pissed Katsu off! There was such potential! Take Katsu's creations here for example. Beautiful creatures, unknown creatures, recovered from ancient fossils, or modified from existing species, or just plain dropped directly into Katsu's lap as if by the Will of the Universe itself! Yet humanity would fear these beings, for their exotic nature, for their power, for their pure otherness. They would fear them, and try to destroy them. It was Blasphemy!
Knowledge was Sacred.
Katsu's thoughts turned dark for a moment, before he heard the sound of fingernails scraping glass, and Katsu looked up in shock to realize that in his anger he had begun shaving off four tiny trails into the surface of the reinforced glass. He inspected the glass hurriedly, making sure he hadn't compromised it's structural integrity. Subject 46L was NOT ready to come out yet. The atmosphere of the planet alone would kill the creature in minutes. Sighing in relief when he saw the holding tank was mostly unharmed, Katsu looked down to his hand, picking the reinforced glass shard from underneath his fingernails. That glass was meant to take armor-piercing sniper rifle fire and bounce it off, but Katsu had dug into it without even putting in effort.
What kind of power had the serum he and his team created bestowed upon him? With that thought Katsu was reminded of the crate above, and with a final affectionate slap and a, “Stay calm, 46L. You're not ready to come out yet, but you've got so much potential.” Katsu left his lab. He had managed to finish all of his rounds, his subjects were satiated and healthy one and all, his experiments had progressed as much as he had expected they would with the time gone, and he had another project to work on.
He had to recover everything his team had created. Stepping into his back garage Katsu approached the crate, punching in a bunch of passcodes into the small keypad located on its side. They were the agreed upon codes known only by members of the Research Team, regulated, recorded, and administered by Dr Ride. With the last code punched in there was a sound like depressurization, and the large crate open up along one face, revealing the massive amounts of its contents. Papers, computer hard drives, and data spikes by the score! Katsu was already smiling at all of the data he was going to get to go through. Grabbing the first thing he could reach, a rather sturdy looking briefcase, Katsu began to load everything into his home...
The next day Katsu was within the bowels of his laboratory once more, this time sifting through the incredible amount of data that had been given to him, a frown solidly placed on his face. His eyes were full of frustration, and he had been sighing constantly for the past hour. This data was old! It was all data Katsu knew of from their project. Every single scrap of paper had been a waste. Katsu knew more than what they had on these papers. Slamming his fist into his desk Katsu looked up to his computer screen, receiving an equal amount of disappointment from that source as well. Despite the massive amount of data contained on the computers, it was a paltry 17% of the full load of data Katsu knew existed within the labs before its destruction. That fatass Oozaru had destroyed almost all of the work Katsu and his team had performed.
All of the data that they had given him, a literal two-ton crate full of nothing but data, had all turned up empty. Growling in intense frustration Katsu banged his head against the desk, and the wooden surface which had withstood his fist caved under his forehead slightly, cracking the material. With a sigh Katsu lifted his head and adjusted the material back into place, slowly forcing the molecules to bond together once more with his limited telekinesis ability. Standing up Katsu looked over to where he had stashed the small suitcase from before. He had been eyeing it all day, but it wasn't anything that Katsu remembered as being part of the project before. That and the fact that none of his passcodes had worked in opening the suitcase made Katsu think it wasn't related to the project. Still, it had obviously belonged to one of the team members, and it might shed some light where Katsu had yet to find any thus far.
Yet how to open it? Surely a device like that would have some security measures, right? It might even have an auto self-destruct if it was forcibly opened, which would be a horrible waste. It meant that Katsu was going to have to hack the locking mechanism probably. Yet, before he tried that, Katsu wanted to test the limits of his telekinesis. If he could open an object like this by feeling inside it with air... Katsu picked up the briefcase and sat down with it in his lap, running his fingers along the seam that marked the opening, trying to push minute amounts of air into the crevice. He concentrated wholly on the task, trying to feel for even the slightest change in pressure that would reveal a way to open the case, but after nearly five minutes of probing he had found only that the case was indeed airtight.
Refusing to be discouraged Katsu took the case with him into his lab. He had machines down here that could analyze the device, and if need be crack it open like an egg. Of course Katsu hoped to find another route to open such a device. Whatever treasure it held inside had to be important to its original owner, and important normally meant full of potential! For the next twenty minutes Katsu scanned the box from every angle with every sensor his lab had to offer, and had learned little. The case was an Iridium and Platinum Alloy, something that was incredibly dense, tough, and a good blocker of radioactivity, like lead. The platinum in the alloy also made it a wonderful little Faraday Cage, blocking out any sort of signal, or perhaps locking such a signal inside? Either way this little briefcase was a tough nut to crack, the only weakspot being the electronics of the locking mechanism.
“Ah, a pity. To think that the lock would be the weakest part of this treasure chest.”
The only thing left to do was to take the case and place it near a device meant to decode DNA. With just a quick reprogramming the device would simply begin punching out every single code available with the existing characters on the security device, eventually finding the right combination. Luckily the case hadn't been programmed to initiate a self-destruct if the wrong code was entered. Which meant that the owner really really treasured the object within, did not wish its destruction except perhaps at the most extreme situations, and that it was probably not of the data variety but something else entirely.
With the case settled away in the decoder Katsu was free to pursue another subject related to the Serum. What exactly had it done to him? Now, at this point Katsu had run at least a dozen tests on his own body, most of the results still waiting to come back from his various devices around the lab. After all it took a lot of time to sift through every bit and piece of a human body to find what wasn't there that should have been, or what was there that shouldn't have been. So Katsu decided that perhaps he should perform a more practical test on his body, to see what he and it was capable of at this point. Standing from his chair Katsu headed deeper into his lab. He remembered he had a specialized room somewhere around the deepest reaches of his lab.. some kind of room meant to, Ah, found it!
The lights turned on as Katsu entered the room, and he was struck by how empty it was. There were only a couple computer terminals in one corner of the room, with what looked like a set of projectors attached to the ceiling. The dust was horrible to. Obviously Katsu hadn't been in this room for quite some time. A quick wave of Katsu's arm flung all the dust into the room at once, and with another telekinetically charged motion it was crushed down into a spot in the corner, compressed into something akin to sandstone. The computer terminal was quickly turned on as Katsu sorted through the files. They were mostly of the Martial Art training variety. Katsu hadn't ever taken an interest in combat before, but Martial Artistry and melee combat was something that heavily focused on the shape and size of the body, and watching some martial artists fight had given Katsu a few hints on how to shape some of his Experiments to make them move more efficiently. Now Katsu was going to take these videos and apply the concept to himself.
Pulling up a basic boxers training video, Katsu got it to project into the room in 3d, for his projectors were actually meant to produce holograms. Staring at the form that was in front of him, Katsu began to mimic the movements of the boxers as they performed a series of shadowboxing warm-ups. The first thing that Katsu was struck by was how slow the movements of the boxer were. Katsu felt like he wasn't moving at all when he followed the video's speed, and after getting frustrated he sped the video up to 10x the normal speed. Only then did the video feel like a workout, Katsu struggling to keep up with the speed of the shadowbowing. He realized it wasn't because he couldn't keep up, it's just it didn't feel right. The way the boxer was moving seemed... inefficient. Wasteful of movement and energy. Thinking on it Katsu began to adjust his own movements to be something closer to what he felt was an efficient punch. Something that drew in a lot more power from the body than those wimpy jabs the Boxer was using.
Soon Katsu felt too hot in his labcoat and discarded it, moving faster and faster, throwing his punches out, trying to perfect the motion. Build the power from the feet, bring it up through the torso, have it flow to the shoulder and down the arm, and finally push it forward out from the fist.
For a few minutes more Katsu continued trying to refine his little punch, but eventually realized he wasn't doing what he wanted, which was to test his power. So lining himself up to the wall, Katsu performed the same punch again, this time slamming his fist into the wall at the end. The pain that shot up Katsu's arm was intense, and he cried out in pain as he snatched his hand back, uttering a few dozen curses before he could calm himself down. Why hadn't that worked? Weren't super strong people supposed to be able to break iron and such like it was nothing? Returning to the training videos Katsu eventually came upon a basic Ki training file, which promptly told him that without Ki Reinforcement, the infusion of Ki into your limbs, a normal human no matter how strong a Ki user couldn't actually utilize their strength.
Feeling stupid at his own error Katsu sighed and read further. The technique seemed very simple. Just concentrate your consciousness on one spot of your body until you can sense a change in your own energy, a sensation that while altogether new for Katsu was one he immediately picked up on, as all Ki Sensitives tended to do. From there it was merely forcing it into his left arm and then repeating his initial punch to the wall, this time with much better results. No pain, and the dent Katsu had slammed into the wall was quite impressive. By the Higgs Boson, is this the kind of power all the Saiyans have? No wonder the average human can't even touch them. Our Serum truly is a Dire Need for humanity in the end, isn't it?
Some more “training” and Katsu figured that the Decoder would be done and he could retrieve the contents of that briefcase. So Katsu picked up his labcoat and put it back on before heading back down the hallway he had come. He had a lot of work ahead of him, but Katsu loved it!
