The smell of the laboratory. The dim-lit, chrome corridors. The red fog. Every night she woke to this. Every night she lifted her head to see the curious yet grim eyes on the other side of the glass chamber that contained her.
Her parents were assassins of the dark organization known as the Red Eclipse. Her mother was a cat zooanthrope named Meril O. who was recruited by the Red Eclipse for her ruthless and vicious reputation in the underground fighting pits. Her father was a something far more complex. Created in an incubation chamber like Roh'ni, her father Pah'mazhan was a bioandroid created by an alien referred to as the Red Fang. She had heard her parents refer to him as Kouda on occasion but she was not sure whether it was a term or name of some kind. Whatever the Red Fang had originally planned to do with her father, all Roh'ni knows is that Pah'mazhan was formed to be a living weapon. Her father's innocence was taken from him by a mad scientist who manipulated him into exacting dark deeds and executing those that Red Eclipse wanted gone.
Raised in one of the laboratories of "Kouda", her parents hid their fondness for her and would spend time with her in secret. In time, she understood that they were assassins and should Roh'ni be discovered, no doubt that this "Kouda" would turn her into another Red Eclipse weapon, used to assassinate whoever the Red Eclipse ordered or whoever an employer wanted. As Meril and Pah'mazhan repeated to her several times, it was too late for them...but there was still a chance for her to live a normal life.
Roh'ni did not want to leave the only warmth she had known...but it was true. All the hiding within secret rooms of the Red Eclipse's ship reminded her of the danger at hand if she were to be discovered by "the good doctor" Kouda. In preparation for her departure, her mother would spent several hours trying to explain to her how the world works based on her knowledge from living in crime ridden streets. Roh'ni didn't understand much of what she said as her mother Meril talked too fast and mostly waved her hands more than she properly formulated words. Her father was less charismatic. Although he appeared mostly human like Roh'ni, she could always see his alien traces when they made eye contact. Her father suggested to Roh'ni that she learn to protect herself if she is to wander out into the world.
As her mother emphasized several times before, there were plenty of "*@#$heads out there that want to *$#% you up. Never let'em! Claw out their eyeballs before they do! That'll teach'em"
Her father Pah'mazhan would typically be leaning his back against the wall with his arms folded as he overhead Meril's advice. Her father agreed and said "Meril is right. There are strong enemies out in the world. I will teach you how to defeat them."
Every night, her parents would sneak her out of her chamber and take her to Meril's personal training room so that they could teach her how to fight.
"Your mother and I fight differently" Pah'mazhan explained to her that her mother uses the claws she was born with to fight whereas Pah'mazhan was made to use a blade. With a flick of his wrist, Pah'mazhan held on to a hilt that shot out of a blade of crackling plasma energy. "You must you use everything in your nature to your advantage, Roh'ni, choose a style that will give you the greatest edge in a battle. You have to fight to stay alive. No matter what. Promise us that," Pah'mazhan sternly requested.
Roh'ni looked at her caring parents and nodded.
"I've decided that I will train in both of your styles. If both of you made me, then it would make sense that I can learn both of your styles" Roh'ni replied.
Pah'mazhan and Meril looked at each other and back at their daughter.
"If that is your choice, then so be it" Pah'mazhan said.
"Yeah that's fine and all. I can teach you how to mess people up, no problem, but what about training under Pah? You don't have a weapon, kid" Meril added.
"I will have a weapon constructed for her. It will counter whatever quick hand strikes your mother teaches you."
Until the day her father presented her a weapon, she trained rigorously with her mother. Her mother was quite small standing only 1 foot tall. It was difficult to track her mother's attacks when they sparred. She quickly learned that timing her attacks was just as important as the speed of her open-hand strikes. Her mother's agile and savage fighting style also meant that she learned to guard from attacks that would be hurled at any place in her body. Her mother Meril was never shy from using dirty tricks to gain the upper hand.
As her mother aptly (and often) put "No one out there is going to fight by any rules so neither will I. Get used to it." After she had learned all that she could within a month's span of time from her mother in open-hand martial arts, Pah'mazhan presented to her a weapon. One night when she was released from her incubation tank by her parents, Pah'mazhan was holding a strange club-like weapon with multiple prongs.
"It took some finding scrap metal from the Golden Fox's (the Red Eclipse spaceship they were onboard of) engine room. Like my own armor and blade, this weapon was forged from the metals of this ship. It should very durable. It might be a slow weapon but your strikes will be stronger with it should you manage to hit the opponent. Your greatest weapon is catching an opponent off-guard and that means being able to switch styles and techniques at a moment's notice. In your case, you'll need to switch between your quick hand strikes and slow weapon strikes."
Pah'mazhan then taught her the formal and martial prowess of using a weapon. Just as much her open hand martial arts, wielding her weapon required just as much as form as it did strength. She learned how to shift her momentum into her strikes and how use the weight of the weapon itself to her advantage. As her and her father sparred with their weapons, it was almost like dancing. Every step the two combatants made controlled the battle and the way she positioned herself was just as important.
"There is a power stronger than any force in this universe," Pah'mazhan one time told her, "a power that can be wielded to protect yourself should you choose to learn it."
A shadow fell over Meril's face as her father spoke.
"This power radiates inside you. It is growing and I can sense it. You are ready to harness it"
Meril then proceeded to speak "Your father is talking about ki. Only a handful fighters on Earth are known to be able to use it. You'll be seen as a freak."
"The ki is strong in our family. My creator has it....I have it....Your mother has it.....You have that power too...."
Roh'ni's eyes widened as her father began radiating an aura of energy around him. Her mother then followed. Objects around the room then began falling off their shelves as wind was being pushed all around.
Roh'ni raised her arm, holding her hand out. Her hand began glowing a teal energy as objects were being held still, floating right above her hand.
"What's happening to me?" Roh'ni weakly muttered as she watched the objects levitate in front of her without explanation.
"Your ki it's calling to you," Meril said putting her paw on Roh'ni's shoulder "...just let it in."
Roh'ni closed her eyes and felt a fire of energy burst within her mind as her aura flared.
Several days later, the time for her departure approached.
Her father walked her through a corridor and spoke to her.
"It's not just the Red Eclipse that must hide from. Your mother and I...there are people in this world that want to destroy us through any means. If they found about you, our enemies might hurt you to get to us. I will not live to see that day that you fall into the hands of a monster because of Meril and I"
Roh'ni listened quietly but then spoke "I don't want to go...I know you and mom say its too dangerous to stay here but I want to be with you. I can't explain it. I don't know but I don't care where we are. I just want to be with you."
"Roh'ni...please don't..."
"Whenever you and Mom walk away from me every night, you don't hear me say 'please don't go'. You and Meril have given me so much but all I need is you two."
"Please understand that we love you but one day when you are older, you will understand that life is not quite that simple. If we ran away with you, the Red Eclipse and our enemies will be in full force to hunt us down. We would only drag you into the danger of our enemies."
Roh'ni remained silent as Pah'mazhan and her walked through an empty lab. Something green and large had slithered behind her that she had not seen. The slug like creature roared through thick mucus as it attempted to chomp down on the unsuspecting Roh'ni. Roh'ni's aura flared up in reflex and she turned around and shot a ball of blue ki at the slug monster's head. An explosion of purple blood and green flesh erupted as her ki made contact with the attacking monster. Two more of the same monsters swarmed around her, angry that their kin had fallen to her. She brandished her weapon "Nine-tails" from her back as the creatures circled around. The weapon weighed down on her as she panicked to keep track of the monsters.
The two creatures pounced on her and she was too heavy to dodge. She was muffled under the slug's bodies as they prepared to devour her. She dropped her blade and drove her hand into the creature's belly until she burst through the flesh. The creature recoiled in pain as she stepped back. Now light on her feet, she leaped towards them and quickly kicked at each of their heads while laying quick small claw attacks at their guts. The second creature toppled over as it gurgled in its own blood.
The third creature was still moving and continued to pursue her. Now with only one adversary to worry about, Roh'ni picked Nine-tails from off the ground and swung it above her head in a circular motion. She swung as hard as she could into the slug monster's side. Her ki channeled through her weapon as Nine-tails bashed right through the slug's body. The room was silent except for the gurgling noises of the second slug monster that had been injured severely. She turned her attention to it and walked over it.
Her father, who she had nearly forgotten about, was watching from afar. His words were cold and quick "Finish it."
As Roh'ni held Ninetails above her head ready to strike, she stopped when she saw the gleaming black eyes of the dying slug monster looking up at her. This creature...she saw something similar...something she had seen in her father's eyes. Roh'ni glanced to see the containment chambers they had come from. Whatever these things were, no doubt that their original forms were twisted by whatever dark sciences were at work here. These creatures were molded in this damned place...just like her father...just like her.
Her father shot out a ki blast that quickly ended the dying creature's pain.
"How could you..." Roh'ni uttered.
"Your pity is misplaced, Roh'ni," Pah'mazhan replied "these creatures were doomed to die by the doctor's orders. These monsters have been altered beyond their own minds can handle. They were not fit to live. They were in pain. You did them a favor"
"But you made me kill them..." Roh'ni weeped "this isn't what I wanted..."
"Out there in the world, you will have to kill as well...to protect your own life or someone you love. This is a burden I hate to have to pass on to you, my child, but there is no other way...it is an eventuality"
Roh'ni's face hardened "Those creatures were no different than us. They were made here like us"
Pah'mazhan turned around and continued walking to the exit.
"Killing...I won't do it. Father, there has to be another way."
"Enough, Roh'ni. This ship is far too dangerous to stay on any longer. Any moment now, it will fly off to another world. Perhaps...it is best that way. You should stay as far away from this place as possible."
Pah'mazhan then kept walking. Roh'ni quickly followed behind him after taking one last glance at the corpses of the slug creatures.
Her mother Meril was standing at a blast door when they reached her. All her life, Roh'ni had always lived within a section of the ship. Now she was venturing through several unknown and new areas.
"When we open this door, you have to run, Roh'ni. Run as far and fast as you can from this ship and don't look back."
"Your future is out there. Not here" Meril added, holding back tears.
"Your own fate is now in your hands. Go now, my strong daughter, with our blessing and decide your future. It is too late for us but your decisions and story are at your hands now. This is where our paths divide," Pah'mazhan said placing his metallic hand on his daughter's head. Roh'ni leaned in to hug the metallic shell of Pah'mazhan's armor. Pah'mazhan was surprised by the gesture but slowly moved his arms around his daughter. Meril then leapt on her daughter's head and hugged Roh'ni's head.
"Raise hell, kid. But just do whatever you want. Always remember that we love you" Meril weakly smiled at her while pressing the buttons on the control panel. The door began to slide down as a blinding golden light filtered into the room that Roh'ni had never felt before.
Roh'ni began to walk through the white light. She gasped as a massive world opened up before her. The world was open, the biggest hole she had ever seen was blue and expanded far beyond her view can reach as white blobs floated within it. Hills of golden dusts were spread ahead of her. It was no floor but a body of sand. She did not realize it but she was already at the bottom of the ramp. When she looked behind her, the ramp had retracted and the door was beginning to seal behind her. Her feet sank into the golden sands. She looked behind her and saw that her father was holding a disc like object that a hologram sprang out of. A hologram of hooded figure in robeswho's face was hidden beneath shadow spoke to her father in a dark and raspy voice.
"Our preparation is over, Pah'mazhan. Our ship now launches toward Namek..." the dark voice that belonged to the robed person hissed.
Right before the door closed, Pah'mazhan and Meril glanced at Roh'ni before the door shut between them. Roh'ni then noticed strange little lizard people walking about moving crates onboard machines into the back of the golden ship. She spotted a man in green garb dashing through the hills. At first, she jumped thinking he was heading towards her but he appeared that he was heading towards the crates. She watched curiously as the man in green garb leaped into one of the crates as the lizard people carried the crates into the ship.
She broke concentration when something flying overhead zoomed past her. A masked person in a top-hat flew right above her and into a hole atop the ship. It seemed that the strange person hadn't taken notice to her. More luck, she assumed.
She heard her father's words within her head "Run as far and fast as you can". She desperately climbed up the steep dune of sand as she scampered away from the ship. She ran as fast as she could as she heard the colossal ship she had always lived within roar like a great beast as it moved off the ground and lumbered into the giant blue hole above her.
She ran for days and weeks. Finding shelter with small rock caves she came across. She carried and ate the rations and supplies her parents had given her that lasted surprisingly long. She had wandered the desert for weeks but the only landmark she remembered was a white tower that rose above the horizon. Whatever it was, Roh'ni used it for guidance. After following it for months and living in the desert, the sand began to disappear into grass and eventually Roh'ni entered the green landscape of a forest.
Bewildered by the towering trees around her, she continued onward into the forest. The shade of the forest was more pleasant than she could have possibly imagined. She came across a river and was frightened to see water take such an odd body.
One day, she heard voices come from deep in the forest. She had not heard another person's voice since she had left the ship two years ago. She climbed a tree and crept up on whoever was talking. Watching curiously from the shadows of the canopy, she saw figures skulking about below in dark outfits that blended into their environments similar to the clothing her parents had packed away for her. The strangers were throwing a glowing green wire around what appeared to be a cloud. She watched on as the cloud appeared to escape but the strangers cackled and insulted the cloud for its efforts to run away. They spoke of giving the cloud to their master. Roh'ni had heard enough. She didn't want to kill but these people were not benevolent at all and were trying to steal the cloud creature. Roh'ni leaped to another tree as she followed the group of masked strangers.
She followed them into an old abandoned temple overgrown with forest life. The skulking kidnappers brought the tangled cloud up the steps of the temple where a person in a similar dark outfit and mask motioned for them to stop.
"You have done well, my disciples. With this, we are one step closer to achieving the magic that will destroy the kami!" the leader spoke. His "disciples" cheered and presented the cloud that was trembling within the green wire. The leader spoke again to the cloud "Tonight we will cast the incantation to destroy you, wind spirit Pooffa. Worry not, your energy will still exist but it will be an instrument for our clan's transcendence" the leader spoke, menacingly pointing at the white tower that loomed above the forest.
The leader's ninja disciples then proceeded to move the cloud into the temple. Roh'ni watched them disappear into the old ruined temple. Night fell and she crept towards the overgrown building. After sneaking past several guards, she found the chamber where the cloud called Pooffa was being held. As she approached it, Pooffa trembled. "Don't worry. I'm here to get you out" Roh'ni said. With a quick open hand strike, she chopped away the enchanted string around the cloud. She opened the window and the cloud flew out into the night sky. Behind her, the door opened, and a group of ninjas wielding curved blades pointed at her.
"What the?! Who is she?! How did she find this us?! She must be working for the kami! You can not run from our clan. If you run, we'll kill you immediately. Painfully. Give yourself up now and the Master will decide what to do with you...you may still live then..." the group of ninjas individually hissed at her.
Her mother's words echoed within her head "There are plenty of *@#$heads out there that want to *$#% you up. Never let'em! Claw out their eyeballs before they do! That'll teach'em"
Roh'ni's eyes narrowed as she got into a battle stance "Before we begin...I apologize for the pain this will cause"
The ninjas swarmed towards her, in prowling crouched positions. They attacked her from different angles but Roh'ni had remembered fighting her tiny mother. She tilted her body away from their attacks and caught them with her hand strikes. A blade had caught her forearm and cut deeply. She shrieked in pain as her blood spread throughout her sleeve. She brandished her weapon "Ninetails". She did a heavy horizontal swing that was large enough to hit multiple ninjas in front of her. They attempted to guard but the giant weapon knocked their blades out of their hands and knocked them back. Wasting no opportunity, Roh'ni stomped her foot on to the nearest one knocking him out. More began to assault her. Her adrenaline was kicking in as the danger grew. Nearly overwhelmed, she closed her eyes and her aura flared, flinging the ninjas against the walls of the temple room. Her ki had caused the crumbling temple tower to wobble and shake. She darted towards the open window and leaped out. She hit the ground rolling. As she ran across the courtyard, more countless ninjas led by her chased after her across the yard. She was cornered at a cliff that looked above a ravine.
"You've made quite a show but I think it would be wise for you to submit. You have no other choice," the leader chuckled, "you'll have to pay for releasing the cloud spirit."
Just then, the tower of the temple behind the ninjas began crashing down. Some were too late to notice. Roh'ni watched the tower slowly begin to fall over the ninjas.
"No!" she screamed as she raised her arms and used her ki to levitate the tower away from the ninjas. The would-be-victims watched in confusion and fear as the tower was being levitated by some force above their head. Roh'ni was struggling to hold and she it let it go someplace safe, away from the cowering ninjas.
The ninjas glanced back at her and then their master.
The leader looked about nervously and then lied "Yes, you see. She must be a witch of some kind working for Kami. She nearly crashed our home on top of us but I used my hidden power to keep it from you killing you all. Yes, its clear now. She must die."
"Wait, what- I was trying to-" Roh'ni stammered as the ninjas began closing in on her. Just then, a cloud pushed up behind her and she fell on top of it. It was Pooffa, the cloud spirit she had rescued. The ninjas yelled in anger and waved their swords as Roh'ni atop of Pooffa flew away into the night sky.
Roh'ni held on to the cloud with a tight grip as she experienced the sensation of flight. The world around her opened up even more. The temple behind her was but a dot and she could the borders of the forest and the desert. The white tower that was always in the distance now felt in reach of her. Her nervous fear now turned into joyous laughter as she soared upward into the sky. She pointed at the top of the tower and Pooffa carried her towards the top.
