History: To know Tania’s story, it is important to first start with a man by the name of Kutao Habara. Ever since a young age, Kutao had always felt a disconnect with the rest of humanity. He was constantly being picked on since he was a bit of a nerd. That’s why he chose to bury himself in various cartoons, video games, and comic books. The guy was basically a shut in with absolutely no social skills, but had quite the interest in technology. Instead of forming real relationships with real people, he instead liked to spend his time tinkering with programming. He would spend countless months creating virtual friends to talk to that were modeled after characters of his favorite series, even if most of the time the end products knew little more to say than “how was your day today?” and “That’s interesting. Please tell me more.” This was enough to keep Kutao occupied for far longer than it should have, but eventually it started feeling empty to him. As much as he liked talking to his creations, at the end of the day they were still just programs on his computer. Eventually he grew to crave more interaction, yet was still too uncomfortable with actual people to actually try socializing with them.
That’s when Kutao got an idea. Why not just create his own companion? He was confident enough in his ability to work with computers, so why not try his hand at creating an android? He could model it to be his perfect companion. Not as a romantic interest of course. Even he had the sense that it would still be a metal doll. The companion he had in mind was more like a sidekick to the main heroes of the various series that he had chosen to immerse himself in. After all, that’s kind of what he viewed himself as, even if he was absolutely nothing like the characters he read about.
Kutao first tried building one completely from scratch with parts he scavenged up from his local scrap yard. However, each attempt was an absolute failure. The most he found that he could do was barely make an outer shell that stood up on its own. Even then, it was so poorly crafted that would only pass for human to someone who was completely blind. After several tries, he tried to get a hold of some discarded mannequin parts to use as a shell to hold all of the vital bits that would make his companion move. However, he couldn’t find any parts that were sturdy enough to hold the interior without overheating and melting with the bulky, poorly designed technology he tried stuffing inside of it. Eventually he just gave up and found a site in which he could order his own kit to design one himself. All that he needed to do was customize her looks and program in a personality. He ended up ordering the ‘child’ model since it was cheaper than a full sized ‘adult’ model, though he had to auction off a few of his possessions online to be able to afford it.
After weeks of waiting for a knock on his door for the very first time in his life, Kutao’s brand new custom android kit was finally delivered to his doorstep. Thankfully it came with clear instructions on how to attach its hair and set its eye color; the guy was never too good at aesthetics. No, where he was positive he shined at was programming in a personality that was fine-tuned to be a perfect match for what his sidekick would be. He was kind of stuck with a companion that looked like a little girl, so why not go with sort of a little sister type of deal? While he was impatiently waiting for the kit to be delivered, he had binge watched a bunch of magical girl series. Those kinds of heroines sounded like they would work. Airheaded, bubbly, and diabetes-inducingly sweet was what he was going for when he got to work on giving his new friend a personality.
The major problem with Kutao’s kit was that it required a decent programmer to work the software that was used to generate the android’s personality. As much as Kutao seemed to think otherwise, he was far from a decent programmer. Once the guy was sure that everything was in place in the coding that he had painstakingly typed up, he activated the android to find that she wasn’t behaving correctly at all. Instead of a plucky magical girl heroine, she seemed to be stuck on the her default personality setting. She had a childlike curiosity to her, yet still carried the thought process and obedience of a freshly awoken android. What was even worse was that she acted completely indifferently to all of his hobbies and seemed genuinely confused whenever he asked her any questions involving them. Kutao had attempted to program in an almost encyclopedic knowledge of his favorite series into her memory bank, which he probably ended up spending way too long on compared to any actual programming.
In a panic, he quickly yanked on the plug connecting the small android to his computer and accidentally fried the only port in the back of her head that would allow him to try to tweak her into something closer to his ideal companion. The small metal girl was now stuck like that. While the android didn’t act anything like how he had intended, Kutao convinced himself that it was still a victory in the sense that he at least had someone to talk to now. He gave her the name ‘Tania’.
While she couldn’t act like much of a sidekick since Kutao didn’t really go on any ‘adventures’ like his idols did, Tania was given the task of keeping the house and makeshift lab in the basement tidy. She would also occasionally venture out with Kutao whenever he needed to do any grocery shopping, where she was ordered to promptly protect her creator from any hazards that got in his way. These hazards were never anything more than a stray black cat lying lazily on the sidewalk, or distracting passerbys long enough for him to sneak past them so he wouldn’t risk them trying to talk to him. It was something though, right? Kutao still didn’t like dealing with people.
While Tania never grew to have much of an interest in Kutao’s hobbies, she did pick up a few things from them since her creator was always watching his shows or playing his games at almost all hours of the day. While she may have been stuck with her default personality, she was slowly learning about the world around her from his t.v. screen. And from what she saw, the world was quite a strange place. Monsters, magic, fighting, and adventuring were all everyday things from what she gathered. And yet there were other instances she saw of things being far more similar to what she was initially programmed to know as everyday life for humans. She found it odd that she didn’t have any prior knowledge to any of this, but Tania still took in the new information and applied it to the way she perceived her surroundings.
One morning, Tania woke up from her nightly hibernation to see that Kutao was gone. The small android couldn’t find any trace of him anywhere, nor any hints to where or why he had left. With nobody there to command her otherwise, she continued on with her normal housekeeping routine. The house was oddly silent without Kutao’s shows or games constantly playing in the background. Even as an android she found it unsettling. Day after day passed with no sign of him. There wasn’t any indication that he would be returning either. Tania’s days had grown incredibly short since the only thing she had to do was keep the everything free of dust since she wasn’t actively cleaning up after anyone anymore.
After the seventh day, Tania plugged herself into the wall to recharge her internal battery and enter her hibernation mode as usual. However, due to faulty electrical work, a power surge shot through her system in the middle of the night. Luckily Tania wasn’t damaged from the powerful electric current. What it did manage to do was switch her into her ‘free roaming’ mode. This gave Tania the ability to make her own decisions based on information gathered about her current situation. It also unlocked a few features that came standard for her android model that she couldn’t use before since Kutao never bothered reading the advanced section of the manual that came with her kit. The power surge also had the added effect of activating the personality that Kutao had tried to program into her, though it only seemed to come in quick bursts before switching itself back to normal, and the bursts seemed to happen at random.
Now that Tania was armed with the ability to think for herself and break her routine, she had a decision to make. While she never felt all that attached to Kutao, he was still her creator. She was programmed to follow his orders and keep the house tidy. At the same time, he had gone and left her all alone for some reason. Had she been abandoned?
Tania initially had absolutely no interest in Kutao’s games or cartoons, but they had slowly grown on her during her stay with him. He was always going on and on about how great it would be to go on an actual adventure. Perhaps that’s what happened to him. It seemed a little strange since he always hated going outside, but he was always so passionate about it that it still sounded like something he might do after working up enough courage. Maybe that’s what she needed to do too. With all of the information she had spent so long gathering on them paired with her natural sense of curiosity, Tania quickly decided that was the best option to take and quickly set off on an adventure of her own. Who knew? She might even bump into Kutao along the way.
Starting Planet: Earth
Techniques:
[SU]Flight - Tania has small jets built into the bottoms of her feet that allow her to fly. These are mostly used to reach high places.
[SU]Ki Sensing - Tania has the ability to scan the area for significant sources of ki, able to be switched off for games of hide and seek
[N1]Rocket Punch - Tania’s arms are detachable and rocket propelled. However, thanks to Kutao’s shoddy attempt to program her, her guidance system is faulty. This causes her to occasionally lose track of her arms after firing them off.
